Tomato On A WRT54G-TM, Can It Be Done?

I have just taken notice of this particular router, and notice it has more memory than the GL. That seems like a good thing, but I don't see it listed under tomato's supported router list. I also noticed it needs a specific version of DD-WRT, but I'm not sure if that means it needs a new driver, or if there is something special about it.

I have a friend who is consider buying a router, but I don't want him to buy this model if it won't run tomato. Any comments?

Thank you
Ed

I am running Tomato (ND version) on that router. Go to the DD-WRT forums and follow the instructions to install DD-WRT. Then, upgrade to Tomato through the DD-WRT upgrade interface. Finally, perform a 30-30-30 reset. The user and pass will default to root and admin

Hi moto I'm from Thailand, not seen this router but maybe will look for it because of the larger memory, if it is possible it could be marketed here .... what market is it intended for, the USA? And once having flashed it successfully with tomato, will it then upgrade normally via tomato web gui ?

Its a special version for T-mobile in the USA, possibly already obsolete as they now have a U version. Can be purchased from ebay, optionally with heatsinks and SD card mod - used to need JTAG to replace the bootloader, can now be flashed via software alone.

Yes, can load Tomato from dd-wrt web interface, also tomato to tomato (ND or old) from Tomato web interface.

Yes, very helpful, both. I have to buy some more routers for another large condo block, it'll probably be the ASUS WL500GP v2, as I've not found that model on sale here - been looking all evening. I don't want to import anything special as if anything happens it all must be replaceable locally.

My advise is that,

either ASUS WL-500G Premium v2 for 32MB RAM / 8MB ROM / 2 USB
or decent price ASUS WL-520GU for 16MB RAM / 4MB ROM / 1 USB

Both are good with 3rd party firmware.

I've been using the 500gP v2 for about three months in two apartment blocks. It's stable, but it's sloww..... the response time is nowhere near as fast as the 54GL (which would be the same as the TM) - it'sd due to the low cost chipset they're using. And now they've stopped selling it locally, it seems. The TM is very attractive indeed, but not on sale here.

eBay

And yes, TM is very sweet. It's fast, stable, cold like my heart. Highly recommend it (with potatoes that is).

Unfortunately, incoming parcels usually either a) stolen or b) Confiscated upon payment of 300% tax.....(or more depending on many "factors") (!!!) so not many people here are confident about buying on ebay. I need someone to hand carry for me... any offers?

Assman - spend most of my time running from people like these ...

[off topic on] Toastman, I will join you next time you go to spend your time with .... [off topic off]

Surely TM version is the most powerful WRT54Gx hardware board that can be used for enriched firmware features and the most important for 'extended connection' with simple firmware mod, but then OpenWRT is the base platform to be used for.

Regards

I just bought one from an Amazon reseller for pretty much the same price as they were going for on eBay. With a lot less hassle.

*Run towards the light my friend, run towards the light *

I see, how do you order other stuff online than? Or you don't?

I guess you mean current production, but I think the WRT54G-TM is already discontinued, there's now a completely different WRTU54G with phone ports? The WRSL54GS had same flash/ram and a usb port and much faster processor - but not same WRT54G format with removable antennas.

I got a WRT54G-TM as spare for similar flash/ram WRT54GSv1.1 (in the days you needed JTAG!), but not sure which is going to wear out first!

Yes mstombs, I was talking about WRT54G-TM , and in my opinion the ASUS WL500gP V1. is the successor (unfortunately discontinued too), then, a robust platform to run Tomato becomes difficult every new day.
