2nd machine - network gets slower?

I just added a second wifi client to my network, and have noticed that the first client now seems slower -- specifically, latency seems noticably worse. Is this normal behaviour for a 802.11g network? The WAP and first client (a desktop machine) are both using linksys hardware, the second client is a dell notebook with the built in dell mini-pci card. The new notebook is physically located between the WAP and the old client, if that makes a difference.

Strangely, when I was setting up the new notebook, I had it upstairs in the same room as the desktop, and there it was getting a terrible wifi signal, much worse than the desktop machine. I attributed that to the big antenna on the desktop's PCI card. Now that the notebook is downstairs, almost directly one floor above the WAP, it's getting a much better signal.
