    Hi,
I know what the first response is going to be but....I am looking for a shoot 'em up and knock 'em down comparison of the various popular firmwares available for the WRT54G. I know that each one was made with a specific purpose in mind, but I'm sure some some of comparison page is avaialble. Thanks

I have been working on this for some time now. though it is a very slow process, and most authors dont list ALL features that are withing the firmwares and newer firmware tend to increase features and its hard keeping on top of all new features.

I'll try and get a quick feature list out soon.

Ok I have run up a list now in the contents page.

this is a list of features that are included in the GUI and not necessarily in telnet/SSH. I have not Included OpenWRT as the features are endless with IPKG packages.

if anyone finds the feature list incorrect for one firmware or another, please PM me with the needed changes.

sorry this took a long time but PhpNuke was giving me a large bug to work with since it didn't like tables.

    Anyway here is the link...

I just unwittingly bought a WRT54G v4 intending to use Talisman to make it my 3rd router in WDS. Guess I will try HyperWRT v2.1 or DDWRT v23b until Talisman v1.1 is out.

Does anyone know if HyperWRT, DDWRT, and/or Talisman will successfully communicate with eachother using WPA over WDS?

DD-WRT works with wpa/wpa2 in wds mode. it will not work with the current talisman version since this version does not support it. but it should work with hyperwrt.
we'll see whats really new in talisman 1.1
and possibly think about a change. talisman is not the solution for everything and since sveasoft is starting new bad flaming wars with lies about me, i think they are close to the ground now

I put DD-WRTv23 on my WRT54Gv4 and it is working great. :thumb:
Using WPA (not WPA2) it is communicating with my other two routers using Talisman.

So I have 3 routers using WPA over WDS! :cheering:

I am going to monitor my traffic and consider switching the 2 Talisman routers over to DD-WRT.

not seeing Parental controls on the chart

I have read over the comparison chart at http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=31
and I am not seeing which firmwares support the Linksys parental control feature on the WRT54GS 1.1. I have been using HyperWRT (don't know the version right now) which supported parental controls in the release that I'm using. Does Hyper continue to support this feature? or is it offered in other firmwares?
I am a power junkie (Uber Nerd) and use the controls to keep my Precocious 10 year old boy out of certain sites (virtual girl prompted this!)

Have you considered adding the Stock Linksys firmware to the chart? I think it would be a real eye opener to people new to the custom firmware scene and it should be easy to do since nearly every feature would be "No".

Also eventually it would be nice to have each feature in the table link to a page with a description of what it does. Obvioulsy that would be a lot of work so maybe the descriptions could be kept in a Wiki... I'd volunteer to help fill in some of the descriptions.

BTW I hope to have some more updates for you in a few days. Keep up the good work! :thumb:

One thing I noticed in the chart is for TX/RX Antenna Selection you mention only Thibor & Tofu as having this feature. I thought the HyperWRT base firmware also incorporated this feature.

I would like to second this request.. Also in the number of port forward fields ect list the number of fields included in the limited firmware such as the Stock and HyperWrt. Extra doesn't mean much.. Progressive should be explained.

Great chart. It really gives insight as to what firmware does what.

I also wouldn't mind seeing the stock Linksys firmware listed on the chart either. It would make for a nice comparison. Plus, is there a chance we could see the chart reflect Talisman's newer 1.1 version?

As for the chart, I think I saw a "reboot" button in HyperWRT's 2.1 version(at least in the latest build). You have it listed as not having one.

I too am new to the world of 3rd party firmware,

I have the WRT54G router, but I have no idea what any of these 3rd party features do, or what there even used for.

Do any of these firmware's add additional port forwarding options, like for example, if a port 80 is being forwarded to 192.168.1.101, and that machine at 192.168.1.101 just happens to be offline at the momment, do any of these firmwares give me the ability to add an "offline" page of some sort? so that if I was using one of my computers as a server, and the server is down, the router can forward the user to a page telling them the computer is down.

is this possible with any of these firmwares?

I mean, otherwise I don't see a real need for any of this stuff really. I use WEP because my pocketpc doesn't support WPA modes, and I don't ever have to go into a command shell for anything, so what are the advantages of any of these?

are you volunteering for this job? lol

my hands are tied with more important things like importing 100,000 users, 50,000 posts, into new database, not to mention running an ads server AND going back to normal work tomorrow.

most newbies to the WRT54G wont need all these features, and should stick to the default firmware until they are ready to try things, whilst this is ongoing perhaps they could read the forums , for knowledge. I cannot write down everything including how to flash a firmware without taking excessive time to do all this. next there will be someone asking can i flash the WRT54G for them:)

    WRT54GS v 1.1 Frequent Internet Disconnects

    Dear BrainSlayer & Co,

I have spent the best part of a year trying to resolve the issue of frequent internet disconnects with a WRT54GS v1.1 using firmware 4.50.5. Sometimes the Internet connection can remain steady for a couple of weeks and on other occassions minutes.

I have given up the Ghost with Linsys Support and exhausted all other avenues. It would be very much appreciated if you could help me and suggest a fix.

The settings on the router are as follows:
Internet Setup: set to Static IP:10.120.0.1 Provider Cytanet in Cyprus
    Subnet 255.255.0.0
    Gateway: 10.120.0.1
    DNS:192.168.5.101 & 102
MTU set to manual : 1350
Network Setup set to DHCP with Subnet default 255.255.255.0 which differs from Internet Setup???
Mac Address Clone enabled....cloning PC's Mac Address
    Wireless Advanced Setting:
    Authentication Type: Auto
    Basic Rate: 1-2 MBps
    Transmission Rate: 11MBps
    CTS Protection Mode:Auto
    Frame Burst: Enabled
    Beacon Interval:50
    DTIM Interval: 1
    Fragmentation Threshold: 2304
    RTS Threshold: 2304
    AP Isolation: Off

Router set for Wireless G Only
Channel: 11 but have tried them all
Wireless SSID Broadcast set to enabled.

    I used to have hair....
    I used to have patience.....
I used to have Faith in Tech Help.....
    I used to have confidence.......
    I aint anymore

I am also new to this site and I also would like to know which firmware has options supporting VoIP.

I wish I knew of this site before I bought a WRT54G version 5 back in January of 2006. But that box is currently being shipped back to Linksys for an exchange because it would not pass VoIP through it.

I could make calls but not receive calls as the adapter and the soft phone, on laptop, would never ring.

I guess one needs to have a sense of humor.

    WRT54G version 5

    And what is Satori?

    Hi,

Based on my reading of this post and the chart I think that DD-WRT is the best you can have.

Like suggested, I'd like to have the Linksys default firmware added to the table.

But my question is: what is Satori? I heard of possible firmware update to my WRT54G last year and the first I heard about was Satori, but I don't see it in the table. Anyone can share some light on this?

    Thanks

  43. Toxic

satori is very old and does not support most versions of the WRT.

  44. meall

    meall LI Guru Member

    Thanks!

I was under the impression that Satori was the latest to become alive!!!

    Thanks for the precision!

By the way, if I go with DD-WRT and I'm not satisfied, can I go back to the default firmware from Linksys without problems?

Also, changing from Linksys to DD-WRT, do I have anything special/recommended to do before doing the upgrade?

    Thanks

yeas you should be able to move back between different firmwares.

just reset the router to default by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds. The ruter will loose all your configured settings but clear nvram for the new firmware.
