I am new to wireless networking, and I could use a little help.

I am thinking about purchacing a WRT54GP2 router, but I need to know if it will work with different ViOP providers, or will it only work with Vonage ?

If the WRT54GP2 can be used with ViOP providers other than Vonage, How hard is it to configure? I have seen many threads about "Unlocking" routers, but I am still unsure what unlocking is or what it does.

Basically, I need to know what I need to do in order to use this router with a servace other than Vonage and how hard it would be.

Any info would be helpful, Thanks.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

If you purchased a router from Vonage, then yes it will be locked and you will only be able to use it with Vonage.

Locked basically means that you are unable to change the settings and will not be able to use it with another service.

Yes there are instructions posted for unlocking VoIP routers for use with other services. But these instructions can be a bit overwhelming to someone that is new to VoIP. And these instruction may better be left to more advanced computer people or networking people.

Most of the VoIP products are locked to their respective service providers that they are purchased from. And it is rather difficult to find units for sale unlocked or un-programmed so you can use them with whatever VoIP service provider you choose. Unless you happen to know someone in the industry. Which is what I have. A friend is setting up his own VoIP system and gave me an unlocked Sipura 2100, a division of Linksys, to test his system.
