I recently put in a 4 mile Point to Point bridged link using D-Link DWL-2100ap radios. Signal strength was > 100% but throughput was 45 Kb. Appearently the ACKnowledge timing is coded for normal range < 3,000 feet. I found a way to trick the radio into eXtended Range mode. Bandwidth went to 16 Megs. Commercial access points have adjustment for ACK timing. Cisco has a field for distance in KM. Has or can the DD modded firmware address this issue ? Is the ACK a paramater that can be modified ? Firmware that can fix the problem would drastically increase the value of $60 Linksys radios. I would love an alternative to the D-link, and the $1,000 access points are not an option for most of my installs.
