Adjusting WDS tolerance on WRT54G in OpenWRT

I'm presently trying to optimize a 3 router WDS (a mix of WRT54G & WRT54GL). 2 of the routers are near each other and have no connectivity issues, but the 3rd is separated a bit (the distance isn't enormous but there's a bit of a maze through concrete). The network was originally deployed using DD-WRT but then was switched to OpenWRT. The 3rd router then had to be switched back to DD-WRT because OpenWRT would drop the connection while DD-WRT just slows.

The connection gets bogged down seemingly during times when there would be a decent amount of interference. OpenWRT would invariably work fine after rebooting but then would drop the connection again. I've tried swapping around the routers, narrowing the issue to software. I have a 4th router for testing which is running OpenWRT which I hope to use to replace the 3rd router, but need to determine how to configure OpenWRT to handle the network issues at least as well as DD-WRT. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I'm beginning to go through the various wl commands available but have little experience with radio.
