In Windows XP there is the possibility to configure an alternate configuration. Windows uses these settings when the DHCP server of your provider is not responding.

It would be nice, when the router does not get an IP from the DHCP server, it would fallback to this alternate confuration.
Parhaps it can be made in a way that we have two options:
    1. it uses the last known IP/gateway/dns
    2. manualy configure it

I think this would be a very smart option,
    what do you think ?

#2 can be dun in shell
#1 If for some reason if the IP/Gateway/DNS has changed that means your provider has you in Dynamic IP so even the last known config wont help. in all cases when the DNS is down from the provider you can allwais use shell or even static addressing. As far the IP/Gatway going down from the provider even if you had static there is not much you can do because end users are assing by blocks so if your block goes down all you can do is pray they move you (wich would never happen) or wait untill the outageis gone.

offcourse can this be done by a shell, but not when I'm at work an my kid wants to be on MSN  offcourse it has to switch automaticly to this configuration, and back to normal when the dhcp server comes available again.

    2nd
I'm on demon internet, demon uses DHCP with static IP's, if you set it static, you will be disconnected every half hour, but sometimes the dhcp servers are longer down then the leasetime is.. when the router switches to this alternate config you still have a connection. During the time this dhcp server is down you won't be disconnected...
And you can allways add other DNS servers besides the one of your provider in the manual configuration.
