I have done some searching and I'm sure I'm missing an obvious post, but here's my question - i know the WRT54GL SUPPORTS Tomato, but it's not perfectly clear from what I've read if I can buy a brand new one and use Tomato - it sounds like I can but before I drop $50 I want to make sure.

I believe what you're thinking of is the older versions of the WRT54G (without the L, but before v5). Those supported full versions of firmware, but can't be found.

With the WRT54Gv5 and later, though, Linksys decided to go with a non-Linux firmware that didn't need as powerful hardware and thus would save them money.

The point of the WRT54GL (the L is for Linux) is a continuation of those original WRT54Gs, for the minority of people who want Linux on their router for third party firmware and such. So, yes, the WRT54GL is available new. Brick and mortar stores probably won't sell it, but you can find it online on places like Amazon.

Newegg currently has them for $59 with free shipping. And there's a rebate to knock $10 more off. That's pretty hard to beat.

Thanks all! Looking forward to my new router, will probably be back to ask about stuff like port knocking. Definitely going w/the Newegg price, from what I've seen that is indeed a decent price.

    Thanks again,

Dang... just realized this is $6 cheaper than when I bought one earlier this month.

Email customer service and ask them for a credit. It worked for me when the price dropped the day after I ordered mine.

OT: Wow. I've always loved Newegg, but they made me especially happy today. I chatted them to see about getting a $6 credit. It's not much money, but that was nearly a 10% price drop. Anyway, they told me that they couldn't credit me for the previous order but would give me a $20 credit towards my next order! Newegg rocks.
