Antenna Position for best vertical reception, WRT54GL

Hi, I have recently purchased a WRT54GL and running dd-wrt v23 sp1 on it. So far no problems in terms of connections other than the occasional hiccup and such. However, I am wondering what is the BEST way to position the two antennas so that the signal is optimized vertically.

I live in a 4 story house including basement and currently my wrt is on the second floor (i.e. 1 floor above the basement where my SMC router is located). My laptop is actually on the 4th floor, so it is 2 floors up from the wrt. I have upped the transmit power to 88 but my signal quality is only very good.

I have heard that the antennas give better horizontal range than vertical range, so would positioning the antenna flat give a better vertical signal?

    Thanks.

Please experiment and let us know! My GL arrives today, and I also live in a four-story house. But my Internet comes in at what you would term the third floor, and I was considering putting the GL there. My goal is to be able to reach not only the house floors 1 to 3 (family is often on floor 4, so I avoid that area!) as well as the yard around the house.

Yes, my understanding is that the antennas radiate in a semi-flat plane perpendicular to the antenna, so laying the antenna down would probably be ideal.

You can also make the antenna somewhat more directional by adding a homebuilt signal reflector, like the plans at www.freeantennas.com
