Hi. New member here. Pardon my 'newbness' in advance but this is my first go-around with custom tomato firmware.

After some research, I purchased an Asus RT-N16 router (don't need dual band) and I'm obviously looking to flash it with tomato. A couple of questions:

    1) What is the most recommended tomato firmware to use with the RT-N16 (stock, toastman, shibby, etc) for best wireless performance and stability?

    2) Once tomato firmware is loaded, what changes is recommended in the settings menu from current default settings?

    Thank you in advance.

I've been using Shibby tomato-K26USB-1.28.RT-MIPSR2-102-AIO for over two months now (24/7) and it's running flawlessly. I have 20+ wireless devices connected + 3 wired ones.
My RTN16 Shibby is running the following services: USB storage, FTP, Transmission, Access-point+WDS (linked to a WRT54GS TomatoUSB), QoS, DDNS, PPTP Client (from time to time) and a very complex port fwd table.

The settings are based on what you intend to do with the router. Do you need VPN? USB storage? BitTorrent? Media Sharing?

If the answer is No to all above then you are pretty much ready to go with basic settings. You'll just need to set up your wireless connection.

I am a Toastman advocate, personally. He focuses his offering on routing and doesn't add other things that are not related to routing (like a BitTorrent client).

Been running 1.28.7500 MIPSR2Toastman-VLAN-RT K26 USB VPN on an RT-N-16 at my dad's office (about 15 concurrent users, plus guests throughout the day) and not had a problem ever. I set it to reboot Saturday nights is all.

I overclocked my N16 to 500 and my wireless connections became unstable. Returned back to 480 and all is well again. FWIW, for my wireless settings, I use Singapore for country, Transmit Power 251 mW, Channel 11, Wireless N only.

I flashed tomato-K26USB-1.28.7501MIPSR2Toastman-RT-VPN.trx but it doesn't seem to recognize my HP laserjet 1010 nor my WD external HD. Should I try installing Shibby instead? I heard it has newer drivers.

EDIT: It works after I enabled USB 1.1 support

I was so glad to see this note since I had been scouring the web to figure out why I can't get my usb-Tomato-Toastman HP Laserjet 1010 to work. I then flashed your tomato-K26USB-1.28.7501MIPSR2Toastman-RT-VPN.trx on my ASUS RT-N15 and enabled USB 1.1 but still no dice. I still get "printer is busy" messages. Works just fine direct attached to iMAC or to Apple Airport Express. Do I need a hotscript? I'm sure I must be making some bonehead mistake configuring the printer or router but I'm stuck, stuck, stuck.
