I think he wants to use wl500gp with storage attached directly to it.
Unfortunately, as of now, that is not possible with Tomato. Try OpenWRT instead.

That should definitely put THAT on the wishing list (Tomato's)! (Why NOT till now?)

Who has Tomato on Asus 500 Premium? Question: in wireless section, which is antenna A and which is antenna B (the external is.....and the internal is....). Thank you.

Yes but also the USB it's a VIF (Very Important Feature). :chuckle: It will be nice to be available through Tomato...

Good thing the V2 is clearly marked. I don't think it could have 64MB though, since it's a cost reduced model. Anyway, V2 has been available for quite a while now, but I guess it's available only in certain markets.

If you look at the photos you will see that it is a single board. No more PCI slot so there are cost savings with that perhaps to pay for the added RAM. The overall chip count is lower too. I cannot make out the exact numbers on the RAM chip to be able to google for the specs.

You can zoom in on the PDF beyond 100%. The chip is Samsung K4H511638D-UCCC.

I could be wrong but I think that is the flash and not the RAM.

{edit}hmmm... at least one google hit says it is DDR 32Mx16

This router does seem to look exciting, does anyone know if it has 8M flash and 64MB of ram? We're pretty certain about the flash size but it's the amount of ram were not so sure of. If the ram is indeed doubled and has the same cpu as the whr-g125, I'll probably special order a piece from my supplier.

can anyone put the tomato firmware in asus wl-500gp v2 ??
i triet so many time and i can't.. oleg work's fine but tomato, in router page, when click in firmware upgrade say's

"Firmware upgrade fail. It may result from incorrect image or error transmission. Please check the version of firmare and try again"

i tried all the tomato firmware and it say's all the same..

    it's because the router is a V2???

  23. szfong

    szfong Network Guru Member

The v2 uses a newer chip, bcm5354, like the WHR-G125 & WRH54G, you may try the "newer driver" release and see if it works via TFTP.

  24. rstudio

    rstudio LI Guru Member

tftp is the program to pass the firmware to router??
i think i allready try it, i have to disconect the router, plug in again (wille press reset) to router stay in clone mode, then i use the program, but the router doesn't responde..

what is the newer driver you talk??
    tomato 1.17 ?

ok i was trying in router page to upgrade this firmware you send, but i was the same error..
i dont understand what you mean by "flashing from stock, 3rd party firmware"
can you explain me how sould i do detail?
i have allready the tftp program, sould i disconect the router, and the connect wille press the reset, and then send this firmware??

i was thinking to make a trade, the v2 version for the "normal" version..

do you think it's better , or in the future the v2 can be better??

    thank you very much!!

  27. szfong

    szfong Network Guru Member

The v2 uses a newer chipset 5354, I believe it may not be completely compatible yet. The whr-g125 was only recently made compatible. Stock firmware is the one Asus put w/ their routers, they often check headers to make sure you not flash another firmware, mistakenly bricking your unit.

Anyhow, contact the Tomato author to add hardware detection for your hardware. Some Asus routers has a recovery application you can use to recover from bad flashes.

you are talk a thing i already remember, contact the tomato author, but i already seek in tomato page and i can't find a email or something..

i can go the router page and see tomato, that never happend's..

but i can't have the internet conection, and i have few time because i need internet, so i put the oleg firmware again..

i'm happy to see for the first time the tomato page..
maybe some internet bad configuracion, i have to see it one day with easy..
or wait for another firmware version.

do you have the tomato author email??

i try to put the tomato in wl.500gp v2 , and only way is by tftp with the firmmware 1.17nd, but in tomato faq doesn't talk about asus wl-500gp V2 ,because it has another chip, can i have serious problems with my router and this firmware??

    sould i take a shot??

Maybe you should try DD-WRT instead. If you really want support for the V2 in Tomato, you might want to consider sending Jon a V2 to test.

    is dd-wrt better then oleg?
    where can i have it?.

but i'm afraid to damage the flash, and then in factory there is no rma, because it has another no official firmware..

There's no need to get your knickers in a twist. Look at the facts.
The V2 is not on the supported list
    Jon didn't answer your emails
Nobody else reported installing Tomato on a V2
    You are afraid to experiment
You won't send Jon a router to test
You haven't demonstrated any ability to test the current version
Your command of the English language is probably not conducive to working through issues

Like I said, Tomato is not for you. I'm not special, just a realist.

maybe your right,it's you vision, but let's look at the facts :

The V2 is not on the supported list > yes i know that's why i post here, and i already make that comment.

Jon didn't answer your emails > jon didn't answer my email. not emails! i probably don't dominate the english but i know there is a diference .

Nobody else reported installing Tomato on a V2 > didn't you ever heard the expression "someone must be the first" ?

You are afraid to experiment >no i'm not,i'm just ask for an advice. i already said i try many tomato firmware 1.13,1.14,1.15,1.16,1.17,1.17_nd.. just tell me what to do and i do!

You won't send Jon a router to test > i don't understand that part, but you mean i sould buy a router to send to someone i don't even know the adress ?

You haven't demonstrated any ability to test the current version > what corrent version?? i said i try it all.

Your command of the English language is probably not conducive to working through issues > maybe you right, but i understand everything you said, my problem is more about write..i will have more care!
    maybe i know other language!!

the user szfong tell me here in post's before "The v2 uses a newer chip, bcm5354, like the WHR-G125 & WRH54G, you may try the "newer driver" release and see if it works via TFTP."

and only with the 1.17_nd firmware i can go to router page, and for the first time i see tomato page.
i put it all right, with ppoe etc, but i can't have internet conection.

i have to confess that i didn't wait to long for the router connect,(2 minutes) because my brother need internet in that momment.
with the oleg firmware 2 minutes it's over time to connect..

i will make another test soon.

i dont' know what you mean by say, that i'm afraid to test.
you know what i call that?? to much pride!

tank's i try it to erase the nvram like you said, but i only can acess to router page with 1.17_nd .

i can't have internet, but like a said maybe i didn't wait the right time..

    i will make another test!

    ok my problem are finish..
with so much flash , my router flash come to a end!!
i can't acess my router, and send it to RMA,
because the router is new i make a trade for the real wl-500gp..

put the tomato 1.16 and it work's fine!!!!

but i got a doubt, i've got 3 lan pc, my doubt is

the tomato are already configurated on port's trigger, for my donwload's, lan games etc??

what ip sould a put on my pc?? or leave it by automatic??
because in tomato i see in port forwarding the 192.168.1.2 ip..

sould i put this ip on my pc??
sould i create other roules for other pc??

    tank's you all!!!

Good you got something working. I only bricked one router so badly that it couldn't get recovered with TFTP. Still have it and plan to try reviving it with JTAG some day, can't bring myself to RMA a router that I bricked. I like to use static DCHP addresses so they get set automatically but always the same to allow creating port forwarding and firewall rules.

2-what about utorrent and games, where sould i open the port, and how, or is it already open??

3-what mean that 192.168.1.2 IP on port forwarding? sould i take it , and put all my 3 IP computer's??

If I understand what you're asking, and I'm not sure that I do, then...

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Tomato allows you to run a DHCP server on the router. This DHCP server manages a pool of IP addresses and assigns IP addresse, default gateway, the domain name and DNS servers to clients set to request this DHCP information. From the picture you posted, you already have DHCP enabled on the router, managing the address pool from 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.149.

Set your PC to "obtain IP address and DNS automatically" so it will request a DHCP address.

Then go to, in your case, http://192.168.1.1/basic-static.asp to set up static DHCP.

The way I have it set up is I put in the MAC address of the PC in question, then the IP address that I want assigned to it and the hostname I want the local DNS to use for that box. Then the DHCP server checks the MAC of the DHCP client and always assigns the same IP from the static DHCP table if a matching MAC is found there. If the MAC is entered then it is used as the criteria to match and the name can be whatever you want, it doesn't have to match the PC host name.

I recently found out that there is an another way to set it up, as described at http://www.polarcloud.com/tomatofaq#how_do_i_add_hostnames_that_i_ . You can enter 00:00:00:00:00:00 for the MAC address, the desired IP address and the name of the device. The catch to this method is the name you enter has to exactly match the host name on the PC in order for it to match so the static IP address is assigned.

On a Windows XP PC, do Start->Run - CMD then entering "ipconfig /all". This shows the MAC addess of the PC, if DHCP is enabled, and the exact host name of the PC, all the information you need to set up static DHCP.

Your LAN subnet is 192.168.1.x with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (or 192.168.1.0/24). You should select static IP addresses outside of the DHCP server dynamically assigned range, 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.149 in this case. If it were me, I would use 192.168.10.-192.168.1.99 or 192.168.1.150-192.168.1.250 as I tend to avoid the very low and very high addresses for various reasons.

You can, of course, manually assign static IP addresses to your PCs on the PCs themselves if you want. I like managing it from the router using static DHCP. I never have to do any configuration on the PCs, it's all managed from my gateway router. It works best with my laptop. When I'm home, I pick up my network configuration here via DHCP and when I'm at work or on the road, I pick up the appropriate network configuration via DHCP there.

As for your question about port forwarding, those rules for 192.168.1.2 are the tomato built in examples that are not enabled. Any address within your subnet range will work and there should be no perfomance difference. Once you assign IP addresses to your PCs, and I would recommend using static DHCP to do it, then you can set up your own port forwarding rules as needed - see the Tomato FAQ at http://www.polarcloud.com/tomatofaq#how_do_i_use_the_port_forwardi for further examples. utorrent works for me and I don't see a port forwarding rule for it. I used to have one. UPnP is enabled both in utorrent and tomato now so must be opening any reqiured ports for me. I had to add one for RDP access to Windows XP Pro. As for games, I'm not much of a gamer so can't really speak to that. Perhaps you'll find something in the Tomato FAQs on this forum - http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=50862

sorry so much work, and tank you for all.

great tutorial! i understand everything, i only got a doubt!

i do it all like you said.
put the MAC address in the router, give a IP to computer, at the begin it doesn't work, but a remember to disconect, and connect the lan cable again, and then i have same IP in router page and in ipconfig..

but when i go to ipconfig/all in DHCP active, said NO.. there is my doubt, the rest it's all fine!!

    some fotos :

first i put my MAC adress and the ip i want : at first i was some doubt because in ipconfig/all i have 3 diferent MAC address like i show in ipconfig picture.
i put the first and it work. note that in this pc i have vista 64 bits. maybe because of that.

then disconect and connect the lan cable, and i can have the exact ip that i put up there, in this case 192.168.1.10..
note that i change too the DHCP server to START at 192.168.1.10 and END at 192.168.1.99 ..

but DHCP still NO.. is that normal?? how can i put it ON..

    tank you!

Rather than unplug the cable and plug it back in, try IPCONFIG /RELEASE then IPCONFIG /RENEW.

Looks like you got the primary interface working. If your network is working, I wouldn't worry about the other interfaces, the Vista IPv6 tunnel link adapaters. If you really want to read about them, you can go have a look at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/ipv6/ipv6faq.mspx or google for more information.

ok, yes my network are working fine, is already working before i do this.
i though that in IPCONFIG/ALL the DHCP sould be ON, i got it OFF.
i google it and see someone with it ON.
but if you say it was fine, better then..

    tank you for all!
