Automatic Shutdown NSLU2 --> how to put hdd to standby?

    Hi,

last weekend I got my nslu2, and apart from the speed (not too fast), I am quite satiesfied. One thing though is that I do not need it to run 247. So I am planning to shut it down at night. I have seen the options for shutdown and restart in the admin's tab, but this only shuts down the nslu2 itself, not the attached usb2.0 drives, which keep running, leading to heat and noise emission and probably a shorter lifetime.

So is there any way I can shut down the Hdd as well (or put them in standby)?

I am helpful for any hints!

This is how I solved this one:

I put a clock timer between the power supply of my hdd and the external disc.

Now a couple of minutes after the nslus2 shuts down each night, the hdds shut down as well (e.g. the power for them dies)... next morning the power comes back, the hdds wake up again, all I have to do is power on the nslu2 manually every morning, but this is the best way I found so far...

I hope switching the external hdd on and off with a clock timer doesn't do them any harm?!

Does anyone managed to restart the NLSU by the auto-restart option??
How does it power up when its in the off state?? :?:

There is a hardware hack to overcome the power off feature and force the unit to stay on but I don't think that will solve your problem entirely. Have a look at http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/HomePage for answers to common questions.
