BEFW11S4 slowing cable modem

I recently upgraded to Comcast's 8mb/s service. When I connect directly to the cable modem, I achieve this speed. When I connect through my BEFW11S4 router, I achieve < 6mb/s, about what I had before I upgraded. The Linksys tech support person was not helpful. I have upgraded the firmware and repowered/reset several times.

Thank you for any help you can give me!

have you tried replacing the ethernet cable?

I believe the cable is fine: it is the same one I used when I tried the direct connection to the modem and achieved 8mb/s.

I wouldn't be surprised if this vintage router only has a 10Mb/s half duplex WAN port, like the old V1/2 BEFSR41 - they could only manage a throughput of about 5Mb/s I recall, which is plenty for Wireless B of course...

I have been worndering the same thing, but the router documentation claims 10/100. Is there an option I can set to force 100 full duplex?

Thank you very much, mstombs! You are correct: the fine print in the User's Guide states that the BEFW11S4 router supports 10mbs half duplex on its WAN port. It supports 10/100 autosensing on its LAN switches. It looks like it is time to buy a new router.

Regarding the WRT54G versus the WRT54GL: I assume that the two are identical except for the Linux support. In particular, both will support 100mbs on the WAN port.

Problem resolved. I purchased a new WRT54G this afternoon and just finished installing it (easy set up). I am not achieving the full 8mbs through the router.
