Borked my Buffalo WBR-G54 wireless

Alas, it has happened to me again. As with my Linksys WRT-54G running DD-WRT, although my Buffalo WBR-G54 has been happily running Tomato for a few months now, with custom QoS settings to ensure that my housemate is unable to hog the entire connection with his p2p applications, it finally gave up the goat with "jumpy ping syndrome" this morning, much like happened with my Linksys WRT-54G.

Basically, what seems to happen is that the wireless intermittently keeps dropping out (as confirmed with NetStumbler), and even when connected and noone is sending any traffic, a ping to results in a wide variety of pings from 1 - 2000 ms; leading me to think that me increasing the transmission power from the set level of 22 to 42 (the recommended default in Tomato) might have killed the wireless chip.

Is this problem familiar to anyone else, or am I just extremely unlucky when it comes to routers running custom firmware?
