I have a linksys befsx41 v.1 router, behind that is a linksys 5 port switch.I finally purchased a laptop computer along with a wrt54gs router version4.I also have a voip phone.I origionally had a wrt54gs v.5 which I hooked up and had running(took the befsx41 out of the picture),but it screwed up my voip service.
I returned the v.5 for a v.4. and would like to hook it up solely as an access point for the laptop, keeping the befsx41,since the voip works flawlessly behind it.Could anyone please advise me,really walk me through the steps on how to do this?I've been trying all afternoon wothout any success.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your replies.

If you turn off DHCP on the WRT then make sure you connect a numbered lan port NOT the internet port to the BEFSX router on one of it's numbered ports it should work...

Thanks guys, got it working, however, just with basic settings ie. no security.when I try to change security settings in GS it shuts down connection. How can I get settings to stick without losing internet connection? This is my first experience with wireless,so this is all new to me.

you probably don't have the same security settings on your laptop... what security setting are you enabling?

Thanks for your help Guy.Under wireless, wireless security, secuity mode is set to disable.Other choices are WPA PERSONAL,WPA ENTERPRISE,WPA2 PERSONAL,WPA2 ENTERPRISE,RADIUS and WEP.If I choose say wpa personal,I need to enter either tkip or aes and then a WPA shared key and then group key renewal (in seconds).I'm not sure how to proceed.

well you need to choose a key and then enter it into your computer, WPA personal is probably good and i believe TKIP is the one that you can use with win XP... then you just need to enter that same key into your network connection, that only works under XP though... if you need full instructions you'll haev to post what card you have, and what OS your using...
i'm going to bed shortly so I probably won't be able to answer tonight but i'll respond tomorrow if no one has got it already.

I had somewhat of a similar issue.

    Trying to chain a WRT54G(router) into BEFSX41(internet-Gateway).

I'm embarrassed to say, after almost changing practically every setting on both routers all I had to do was, take the cable in the WRT54G out of the Internet port and plug into one of four the LAN ports. Instant internet.
