Is there any firmware that will increase the wired transfer speed on a WRT54 form 10/100 to 1 gig? Is it even possible to do?

I don't think the network chipset is capable of 10/100/1000.

It's not, and thats a hardware thing not a software thing so theres nothing that can do that with firmware.

If you need gigabit, get a gigabit switch and plug it into the WRT. This will give you 100 mbit connection to the internet and gigabit to the rest of your LAN. If you have a gigabit internet connection you shouldn't be dealing with home grade equipment Linksys and look at a Cisco device.
