Can't addressing by machine name

I have a persistent VPN tunnel setup between a router at my studio and a router at home. The stack looks like this:

    Linksys BEFSX41 router
    RCA Cable modem
    ** Internet **
    ActionTec 1524 Dsl router
    Linksys WRV54G router

I can address machines on the network by IP but not by machine name ( works but Computer1 does not). All machines are running Windows XP. I have NetBIOS enabled in my network card TCP/IP settings for all machines and I have NetBIOS broadcast turned on in the VPN settings for both sides. All machines are part of the same workgroup as well. Does anyone have any ideas of what to check next? What service is supposed to convert a machine name into an IP address?

I dont know if this would work but try the hosts. file in windows\system32\drivers\etc\

edit it and add your ip and machine name.

    like so....(just an example) localhost My_UBR WRT54G

see if that helps. you may need to do this on each machine as well.

Thanks much! I'll give that a try.
