Can't connect ubuntu netbook when using DHCP

    Hello,

    I can't seem to get an ubuntu nebook to connect to a Buffalo WHRG54S router running tomato v1.28 when I ask for DHCP. In summary, if I ask network-manager to use DHCP then the wireless connection fails, but if I provide the static information it works. The DHCP works fine on at least three other wireless networks that I have tried for this netbook. That said though other devices such as an iphone and android phone work fine with DHCP on my home network.

    My wireless interface card on the netbook is an Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100.

    I wondered whether it was something to do with ipv6 so I disabled it on my netbook, by adding the following sysctrl.conf:
    Code:
    net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
    net.ipv6.conf.default_disable = 1
    net.ipv6.conf.lo.disable = 1

    This did not help.

    Here is the relevant bit from the logs on my netbook:
    Code:

    I would suspect the Intel wireless, Intel have a history of incompatibility and lousy wireless connections. The fact that providing your own static IP works but the DHCP fails is a common problem with Intel cards. Usually a driver update can be found that fixes things.

    But isn't it strange that the netbook works fine on the other wireless networks I've tried, or is it all just part of the incompatible nightmare?

    I will look into updating the drivers but I do have the latest Ubuntu and I thought INtel drivers were meant to be good because they were opensourced ... oh well.

    I don't know who is right or who is wrong :) I can tell you that several well know developers such as Oleg called Intel's implementation a mess, and I can also tell you that this has been going on for years, not just with Tomato but with just about every other router too (google it and you'll see). Mostly that was with Windows XP drivers, Windows 7 seems much better. There does not seem to be any pattern to it. Some work, some don't.

    Possibly the Linux drivers are written by the same crew, and suffer the same fate? Who knows?
