What does cfe.bin? How to read the file?
Its the bootloader - mips binary. There's an option in Tomato to back it up because its stored in the flash chip, and if you corrupt it you have to use JTAG to recover. It stores you hardware MAC addresses so they are all slightly different.
And, it is useful to save cfe.bin? What is used and how?
The CFE - common firmware environment - is great for changing the mac, overclock, double the ram (for certain wrt54g models eg. xh, xb), option to allow for easy-recovery via tftp etc.. -- even if a router reset is performed. I often alter it using a hex editor and flash it from openwrt or dd-wrt, as the cfe writer I use is not compatible w/ tomato. It's also great for bricking your router if not careful that even tftp cannot recover from.
