Changing my IP

I'm running XP Pro and have internet access through Charter Communications. What I would like to know is How can I manually change the IP address? I had directions for this once but failed to print them and had a computer crash, so now they're gone. I do remember the commands were in DOS. They're not the ipconfig/release and renew though. Any ideas?

If your IP is dynamic, i.e. assigned by Charter's DHCP server, then you can't manually change it as such. If you release the current one and wait a bit before renewing it it's possible that you will pickup a different address. A lot depends on how long the DHCP lease time is set to and whether someone else is trying to renew an address at the same time.

BTW what does this have to do with Linksys BEFSRxxx routers?

i have cable internet. and i was trying to figure out how i can change my ip. so i talked to my isp and they told me that the ips are tied to macs. so all you need to do is change your nics or ap/routers mac and reboot ap/router and modem and you got a shiny new ip.

if the ISP gives you a dynamic IP address then either clone your mac address or disable mac addres cloning.

either way will make your ISP give you a new IP address. you will most likely need to reboot the cablemodem as well as the router and PC.

    bootup in this order.

    Cablemodem, router, pc.

    hope this helps
