Hi, I just bought WRT54GS v4.0 before going deep into the forums :( Now, would it be better to change it for WRT54G v3.1 if possible, considering support for 3rd party firmware?

If you don't have use for the Speedbooster (i.e your adapters don't support it) you might as well get the WRT54G v4 which has almost the same hardware as the WRT54GS v4 but at a lower price ;-)

That said, with WRT54G v3.1 or v4, you get the same hardware functionality - just make sure you avoid the WRT54Gv5 like a plague!

Speedbooster is not relevent. I decided to go with WRT54GS v4.0 because I thought that it was 8/32 mb after reading the autopsy (yeah, stupid me , but 4/16 is still enough). The other reason was that it is already supported by dd-wrt for example. But now, after reading the forums thoroughly, I see that people really have problems flashing v4 G/GS routers. The most important are mentioned here - if you're VERY lucky and successfully flash it with 3rd party firmware, you might not be able to go back to original Linksys drivers. The supplier I got my WRT54GS 4.0 from also has WRT54G 3.1 in stock. So, what I need to hear from you is that if I change my GS 4.0 to G 3.1 I can be 99,8% sure to use 3rd party firmware without major problems and can stil get back to original :)

If Speedboost is not relevant, then I'd go with the G 3.1, if for no other reason than to save a few bucks(nevermind the fact that 3rd party firmware should not present any issues like the V4 GS possibly does).
