Connecting two WRT54G routers via wireless

We have purchased two WRT54G boxes plus antennas etc to set up internet sharing between our two farms. We have installed all the hardware and are ready to begin sharing but we have no idea how to. The AP (in the boxes) is connected to the satellite box, and the local internet connection is working via WiFi enabled desktops and laptops, but I cannot connect from my setup next door. (about 1km distance). I have searched the how-to's and forum but I cannot find anywhere a description of the concept of this form of sharing, or any list of settings I can try. Is there a step-by-step tutorial available anywhere which can guide me in this. Is changing the firmware neccesary, and how is this done? Which is the best firmware upgrade? Basically I really need help in how to go through the entire process. Any help or directions to where I can get help will be very much appreciated.

Signals won't reach 1km. And wrt doesn't have any wds.

    switeeann is right.

You are faced with 2 major issues:

    1. Distance

While the record for the furthest a Wi-Fi signal can reach is much greater than 1Km (125 miles!), it has been done with special antennae. Normal equipment does not extend so far, in reality about 100ft or so, and even worse if there is no line of sight.

    2. Hardware support

Don't know who or what gave you the idea that you can two WRT54G units out of the box. To connect them together you will need custom or 3rd party firmware that adds WDS (Wireless Distribution System), Client mode, or WET (Wireless Ethernet Bridge) functions to the router. To complicate the issue, there are several versions of WRT54G and not all versions can be upgraded to a custom firmware easily. To find out which WRT54G version you have, turn the router upside down - it's on its product label.

which 3rd party firmware adds WDS or WET function to WRT54G V2 in order to allow it to work as a repeater or AP connected via wireless to a WRT300n?.

    thanks in advance

    Thanks for the answers.

I should have mentioned though that I do have the outdoor antennas already set up and aligned, and I have installed dd-wrt firmware on the boxes, and since my original post I have been able to share files between two laptops connected to the WRT's. This was achieved whilst both boxes were inside close to each other as a test. What I need is an explanation of the concept of internet sharing using this gear, and some idea of the settings required on each unit if that is possible.
