Connection problems

Discussion in 'Networking Issues' started by bihseternalflame, Aug 1, 2006.

  1. I recently purchased a linksys WRT54G v6. The router itself is connected my main computer with the cable modem, while I also have a wireless laptop that I use. My internet for BOTH computers repeatedily goes down every 30 or more minutes and I have to unplug and replug in the router and modem to get them working again. Also when this happens both computers say that they are connected perfectly to the router/modem so Im at a loss on what the problem is and unfortunatley am not very computer literate at these kind of things. Any support would be appreciated

Hey Guys, may we know who is your ISP and what is the model number of your modem?

Also, what prompted you to unplug power to router and modem?

Did you release IP from the modem before connecting it to the router? Cable modems often lock to the MAC address of a particular network adapter, so switching to a router is like switching network adapters - it can refuse a new connection.

Any other symptoms related to the problem, such as were you able to logon to your router?

PS. Note your computers are not connected to the modem, just to the router.
