I can't believe it! My WRT54GS started screwing up and I had Sveasoft firmware and when I tried to re-flash it, it wouldn't work, so I tried what I thought was the official linksys but it wasn't - now my WRT is just a swich!!! How can I get the real firmware into it!!! Help Please!!! I Need this box ASAP, as it is my family's primary internet gateway!

Hard reset first, then try installig the firmware of your choice

Hard reset meaning unplug / replug, or using reset button - neither work - simply acts like a swich. Not able to TFTP firmware either. HELP!!!

Hard reset meaning press and hold the reset button for at least 30 seconds or more while power is on. This should reset the router to factory settings for whatever firmware you have loaded.

    A couple of important questions:

    1. "when I tried to re-flash it, it wouldn't work"

What exactly DID happen when you went to re-flash it?

    2. " tried what I thought was the official linksys but it wasn't"

Well, what was it then? If we know what you do have on there, it might make it easier for someone to advise you on how to access its firmware update screen, if that's possible at this point.

    3. "Not able to TFTP firmware either"

There is a brief period during startup where you may be able to. Configure a manual IP address to, say, 192.168.1.10 on your PC, and see if you can ping 192.168.1.1 while the router is starting up. If you can, try the TFTP command again. This will depend, of course, on how long your router stays in this mode during startup, and whether 192.168.1.1 is the actual default IP address, which will depend on your firmware (see #2)

I don't know what firmware got on there, if any... Whenever I tried to upgrade initially it would just come up with a failure. No worries now, as I exchanged it at Wal-Mart for a brand new version 5...

    Oh no a version 5?

You do know that the version 5 is running VxWorks and not Linux?
I sent my WRT54G version 5 back to Linksys because it did not work. I am waiting for the replacement unit.
