i dont know. but maybe thats the reason why linksys only released the sources and not the firmware. was a nice try. okay now back to the old variant. i found also out that newer G and GS models have swapped again the antenna selection. i was totally confused about a non working ap in my town and i found out that the antenna selection is swapped. just as small information. this seems to be on GS 2.0 models. you can see it on a mac which starts with 00:13:10 instead of 00:12:17

Do you want any of the sdram or cpu nvram values from any of my routers - I have a V2, V2.2 and a V3 all running the the pre5 May 28 build

Well, unless you have a problem and need to do a reset, your config should survive the upgrade..

There were a couple releases where backup did not work, I used older backups - I know, not a good idea, but they will/might work in a pinch

pencil and paper is your only other alternative

Update: Up 12min and I am still alive :)
Problem: There is 2 many dam settings in here to figure out with little sleep and I luv it. LOL

Hyperwrt is great but DD-WRT is da bomb!
I luv these routers and thanks again brain. Much apprec. for the effort that goes into this and all you other folks that help in the forums.

The Latest version of DD-WRT is so slow. My wireless rate is always around 1 to 11mbps. Before I upgraded to this DD-WRT I was using the Freeman Firmware and the speeds were way faster than this. I dont know if this is a bug or not. But Brainslayer can I change the settings so my wireless Speed rate wont be so slow.

Just one question. Can I flash the router with the new 28/5 firmware from the existing Linksys firmware I have on it? Just reset and flash? Or should I put some other firmware on it before I flash it. Yeah I know a n00b question but I am a little worried.

BrainSlayer: In the meantime I translated the firmware to Slovenian language. Should I send it to you via PM or Email?

i did some benchmarks against freeman and the wireless speed compared together with dd-wrt is always the same. no big difference and there wouldnt also be no reason why freeman is faster. i know that hyperwrt seems to be significant faster. for dd-wrt the only solution to get more speed is to recompile the netfilter stuff with faster compiler options. for generic speed enhancing configurations you may try to lower the max tcp connections in the administration->management menu

my https is working. can you look into the process list (ps aux) if https is enabled?

there must be a line like this:
    107 root 628 S httpd -S -d /www

then please check if https is enabled by doing the following
    ~ # nvram get https_enable
    1

and finally check again your administration->management interface, if you really set https as enabled. (not to forget to check your firewall rules)

An update on the May28 Pre5 build on V2 hardware

It looks like there may be a problem with 128 WEP.

If I enable 128 WEP, I cannot associate a client with the V2. I deleted the key and re-entered. The key is the same as my WDS node and I cannot associate with the WDS station either.

If I remove WEP, the client has no problem connecting

WEP 128 is working fine on my V 2.2 and V3 routers with the pre5 May 28 build

I have not fallen nack to an older release yet if there are any NVRAM values you want to see

    dellsweig Network Guru Member

All my current testing is with the May 28 Pre5 build.

When I fall back, it will be to:

    1) the last pre5 build which was 'stable' - May 18
    2) the public pre4 build
    3) hyperwrt
    4) Stock Linky

What I am seeing with the V2 Hardware ONLY is that it appears there are still some incompatible nvram settings - or posssibly sets which do not correctlyu take. Like I said, The pre5 May 28 build is working FINE on 2.2 and 3.0 hardware

Here is what looks to be the final status on my V2 WRT54G

I backed out the May 28 Pre5 build. I could not get WEP associations..

I did a hard flash with the Linksys restore tool back to 3.x.x (Linksys). Got WEP working (same cleint keys) as well as got WDS associated (lazy WDS client).

I upgraded to the May 28 pre 5 build. All settings held fine. This time I did not see any reboot cycles many have seen n th V2 hardware.

Went through and tweaked my settings from default. WDS client associated fine (WEP 128, lazy WDS). I set the MAC address of the WDS master and turned lazy WDS off. The WDS master showed a signal strength of zero from the client. Turned lazy WDS back on and V2 client associated no problem. Turned lazy off again as I was going to reenter MAC - without re-entering, WDS now works fine

I would say there are some configuration issues with the V2. Either conflicts with old settings or new settings not sticking....

    I will keep testing

Freeman seems to be faster to me because It loads webpages faster than DD-WRT can. Also when I download files it also seems to download faster than DD-WRT

If https was working fine before in pre4 without having to mess with firewall rules.. why do I have to look in to the firewall rules in pre5?
Also my v3 is the same way and Also jagboy is having the same problem so I know is not just me.

Unfortunatelly, the new PPPOE module still doesn't work with T-Online DSL. Getting redials every 30 secs since the connection is not recognized by my WRT54GS.

    But RP-PPPOE works, though...

I've also got a WRT54G v2.0 and I was able to flash the firmware this time (28-05), but I had to do a hard reset.

Since pre5 I sometimes lose connection to the router, I have to power cycle the router to get a connection again.
I use DHCP static IP's and WEP 128 encryption.

Also Boot wait was set to off by default when upgraded to pre5 28-05

I tried the 1/6 pre5 from pre4 on a 54GS 1.0 and it got hosed...stuck in reboot loop for over 10 minutes. I used the prefinal5_basic_wrt54gs image. I was able to get things back up after holding reset for a while it finally stopped rebooting but the power button just blinked and no web interface/no routing, just ping. I used tftp and the Linksys 2.07.1 firmware -> prefinal4 to get it back working.

Prefinal4 is back working fine now, but I'd like to know if anyone has had something similar happen with a WRT54GS 1.0.

    Thanks!

btw I hadn't tried any pre5 before 1/6, but I don't have a copy of the earlier builds to test with. Where can I get the older builds of pre5?
or should I not worry about it because this will be fixed? :)

brainlsyer when will you add the led mod for the wrt behind the cisco logo

  54. XCOM7

    XCOM7 Network Guru Member

Actually Brain Slayer it will be best if we add a hack where it monitors the CPU Process some thing like...

If CPU Usage>90% Amber Light ON - CPU Usage<90% White Light ON.

Wich will go some thing or close to bash:
    uptime | awk -F, '{if(int($4)>1){system("gpio enable 3")}else{system("gpio disable 3")}}'

But thats just will turn on the amber light and not the white one when under 90% also it will only run once.

I think it will be a good add on if we implemented these one ;)

no i dont need a massive request for just a led. you're talking about i a small light. i guess there are more important parts now. if i have some time left. (you know i have no router with this special light), i will add something like that.

    I have the pre5 May 28 build working on all three of my routers (V2, V2.2 & V3) WRT54G

The 0601 pre5 puts the V2 in a reboot loop. Reset did not help, finally had to use the Linksys loader to clean the flash and reload stock. Went directly to pre5 May 28 from there. Loaded back in my restore file and it is back up.

I think until Brainslayer figures out why the V2 behaves this way, I will wait

  65. dellsweig

    dellsweig Network Guru Member

I am just passing on how the 0601 build behaves on my WRT54G V2 box.

I know that this is difficult to debug... If you have a build with any kind of tracing or logging so you can see how far the box initializes, let me know.

It appears to boot and load the hardware drivers. At some point in the startup process it resets. Without a console, it would be hard to give you more detail than that. It would appear the OS is up and in multi user mode. It would appear the problem is in the wireless config scripts as I never see the wireless (with netstumber) initialize.

I am sticking with the May 28 build. I have great faith in your debug abilities PLUS I know I am not the only one having V2 problems so the community mind should help solve this

  69. dellsweig

    dellsweig Network Guru Member

Do you have something to try??

What specifically does the "code pattern" do and when does it do it??

  70. BrainSlayer

    BrainSlayer Network Guru Member

this code pattern is a special header in the firmware binary. thats why i currently release 2 binaries per firmware type (G and GS separate)
this pattern is needed to support tftp flashing while boot wait phase.
so you take the G firmware for WRT54G models
and GS firmware for WRT54GS models. switching is not possible and brings a tftp error. but the only difference between these 2 firmwares is the header and maybe this header makes also troubles on some router models

  71. samueldg

    samueldg Network Guru Member

Could be that Sebastian, but from some "pre5" ago, the WRT54G v.2 could be flashed via web without problems, but they don't restart fine.

I think code pattern isn't the problem. because in 5/28 pre5, i can flash the WRT54G units without problems and that pre5 haven't got the code pattern on it.

In my case, problems began when the "change logs" adds a line like "added new wl driver" (or some thing as it), and afther that pre5, the WRT54G v.2 devices don't restart after a successfull pre5 firmware flash.

I'll try the today firmware versions, and say you what say my 2 WRT54G v.2 routers.

    Thanks for your job.

the 5/28 hasnt the new wl drivers. and the 1th june build just has some pppoe fixes and comes with the code pattern. the rest is unchanged.

    a little problem with pre5-28-May :

Access Restrictions panel is broken while using ssl http to connect

    - using https://xx.xx.xx.xx/Filters.asp << the page is broken.

5/28 works great but 6/1 puts it in a reboot loop. it dosent brick it but there is no web interface, telnet, wireless, dhcp, or internet. nothing but ping response. one thing i noticed is that with 5/28 the ping ttl is 64 but 6/1 the ttl is 100. i don't know if that means anything to anyone but thats what i saw.

I have a GS vers. 1.0 with the 6/1 build and got the reboot loops. How do I fix it, I got it to be tftp'able but when I do try to reflash it the response is a code pattern problem.

    Update:

The fix for the problem I was having resolved around the recovery firmware I was using. I downloaded the Satori 4 firmware and did the samething and the firmware took without a problem. So if you are having problems flashing with other versions of dd-wrt/freeman/openwrt/ect try that.

  77. jagboy

the reboot loop can be fixed with a very hard reset i have heard.

  78. Filibuster

    Filibuster Network Guru Member

Ok, so someone else with a GS 1.0 has the exact same issue. Now we just need to figure out why. :) I also fixed mine the same way (someone else mentioned it in another thread I think)

Did your work with the 5/28 build? I don't have the 5/28 to try or I would look at it, if it would help. (not sure if nvram settings are different between pre4 and pre5). Anything we could do to help with this Brainslayer?

    Thanks.

edit: Jag, a long reset gets it out of the reboot loop but it still doesn't function other than ping and tftp. I let it wait a really long time and it doesn't snap out of its funk until reflashed with linksys 2.07.1 (or satori I guess, which is based on 2.07.1 I read)

  79. dellsweig

    dellsweig Network Guru Member

I have been able to get my V2 out of the autoboot loop after a long reset then reflash with the Linksys 3.03.6 autoloader. Sometimes takes 2 tries but always works

  80. Filibuster

    Filibuster Network Guru Member

You've gotten pre5 6/1 to boot fully this way? I can get linksys firmware back on it no problem and from there to pre4, I just can't get pre5 6/1 working afterwards. I'm assuming the "linksys 3.03.6 autoloader" flashes it back to linksys firmware.

  81. dellsweig

    dellsweig Network Guru Member

    That is what I said...

I can go from the Linksys factory flash to pre5 May18 build, no problem but if I try the June 1 build - reboot loop is the result. (V2)

After bricking my GS 1.0 two more times with the 6/1 build I gotta say it just doesn't run on it. I got it to boot once where the webpage would work but as soon as I changed anything. It was back to tftp an old firmware on it to revive. Donno what changed between the 5/28 and the 6/1 that would brick the version 1.0's but it does.

I have to agree with " zgamer ", DD-WRT from May 28th onward just Bricks GS ver 1.0. I have been fortunate to be able to debrick via tftp. Hopefully, BrainSlayer can can identify this anomaly and fix it.

FYI people having problems with reboot loops on GS 1.0 routers, this revision worked for me after flashing and long reset! (GS 1.0) I am assuming the G 2.0 problem is fixed also because they were about the same from what I've read.

    Thank you BrainSlayer!

Confirmed.. I have a GS 1.0 and it flashed and is running without issue.

How ever there still appears to be a wireless performance issue that dates back to Alchemy which I was using up till today. I thought that the newer drivers had been integrated and this had improved.

Tested with 2 54mbit wireless G cards QoS WAS DISABLED.

    Official Firmware 25Mbits +
    HyperWRT 25Mbits +
Alchemy 1.0 jumps between 4 and 13 Mbits
    DD-WRT 6/5/05 jumps between 4 and 13 Mbits

Sort of disappointing when your GS equipment can barely break 11Mbits.

Going to check out the extra features.... but there are really only 4 things that I REALLY want to see in a firmware.

Wireless Performance close to the official firmware ..... FAIL
    Advanced QoS ........................................................ Check
    Static DHCP ............................................................ Check
Nice Interface (I don't even like the linksys one ;))..... ????? coming soon
    Modular .................................................................. Getting there

I hope that there is some way the wireless performance can be improved.. I can't believe people use DD-WRT or Alchemy for heavy wireless use due the these performance issues.

    SUCCESS!!!!

I just loaded the June 5 build into my WRT54G V2 - NO PROBLEM.

It booted without the need for a reset - the configs look good, it associated (WDS) with my network!!

Now it is time for some testing - before I upgrade my other 2 boxes

Brainslayer - I read the release notes - what is different in this build that makes it work as compared to the May 28 build (for example)??

WRT54G v.2 issue isn't solved with this 6/5 prerelease 5, sorry for this bad news.

Could be some little changes in switch driver?, is the diference between a g v2 and g v2.2.

In g 2.2 units and gs 1.1 units this prerelease is working fine (at the moment).

Good work dd-wrt team, stay there with us!!

    prefinal4 (Talismen) to prefinal5 (05. June)

    Hi,

when I try to upgrade from prefinal 4 to prefinal 5 over the web GUI, I get the error message "page cannot displayed" or it seems to work, but then the message -> Upgrade failed appears.

So I tryed to go back to the official firmware, but with the same result. How else can I upgrade my WRT54GS?

    THX!

!!!!! Going back to factory RESET fixed the problem !!!!!! Now I am running prefinal 5!

i'm now in discussion with a experienced wrt developer and he will provide a cvs to me. this will make the development much faster and more safe. and any person can access the latest sources (read only)
with a hint from that developer i guess we found the performance problem source. its a changed which was made to support rflow (done by sveasoft). i'll check the changes and hopefully we get more speed in the next days. prefinal5 seems to be almost finished now. just some language changes are open and minor fixes

    Awesome!!!!
Is the final going to be completle ported to openwrt? or is that going to be in v23?
    Thanks BrainSlayer Grate Job!

    Edit:
Also what is the trx file?

That's GREAT!!!! I look forward to testing the wireless performance change when it is released. As it stands I can't stream large video files over the wireless link, and I avoid any large file transfers because of the inconsitant performance.. The connection jumps between 3Mbit and 13Mbit (AVG is only about 5Mbit), its only good enough for surfing.

I will probably be testing the QoS over the next few days to ensure that it works as well in DD-WRT as it did in Alchemy 1.0.

    Keep up the amazing work!!!

    DHCP not working ???

ive just "burned" the prefinal 5 (5/6/06) it works fine but there is a problem with DHCP :(

Most time either the wireless clients nor the LAN Clients getting an ip-address.

Ive hard-reset the router but it wouldnt work.

DHCP (on Setup Page) is ON, providing 192.168.1.100-150

    DHCPD (Administration Page) enable
DHCPD used Domain .... both selections tried

    im stuck now :(
