DD-WRT v2.3 L7 slowness?

Sorry, I've been searching the forums like a madman, but haven't seen too much regarding this. Heard something on another forum about L7 being a little slow. I tried to QoS my Adelphia 6Mb/768k connection with very minimal BitTorrent traffic (uTorrent) to the tune of 30kU/15kD with ~50 connections. That plus web browsing was causing the Unreal Tournament (set on Premium, whereas others were set on bulk) ping rate still spike pretty high (10x normal) and even SSH terminal sessions also on Premium to crawl or timeout. Is this because the CPU can't handle the load from the L7 filter? I imagine it would take the same amount of processing power for a dedcent amount of packets no matter what type they were... And the default QoS settings are almost all L7 based.

Also, how does the L7 know what type of paket it's looking for, does it have built in defaults that somehow match the name of the QoS profile?

Even when I switch it back to port based, but http traffic up, DNS traffic up, leave BT on standard, it's a little better, but still not great.

Am I asking too much of QoS?

    I have a WRT54G v2 for reference.

I apologize if this has alrady been covered, I imagine given the size of the forums it might have, but I can't find it.
