Well that depends on what you are trying to do. As a general rule, no you dont have to use the same routers, though you may need to use the same type of firmware.

dd-wrt will not run on the WRT54G v7 due to it having atheros chipset

so basically, since dd-wrt firmware doesn't work on my netgear router it won't work then?

Not necessarily, again it depends on what you want to do and what the netgear offers. Now if you want to just use the wrt as a wireless client from the netgear or vice versa, that should work fine. However if you wish to use or make a special WDS implementation, i dont think the netgear offers WDS support so that will not work. Just depends on what you are wanting to do.

ok...so what's the difference between making a wireless client and WDS? what i wanted to do is just have a wireless router in another room and hook that up to my xbox and then another wireless router in a different room that is hooked up to my cable modem....which i think is called a WDS. sorry about all these questions, i'm kinda new to the networking if you guys already didn't notice...hahha thanks a lot for your input though!!

WDS acts like a repeater and making another router a wireless client makes that router act like a bridge. I think you would be best suited to make the router connected to the xbox a wireless client of the router connected to your isp. You should have a setting in ddwrt under wireless that you can choose to make one a wireless client. You simply need to choose that setting and make sure you use the same ssid and encryption key as the host wireless.

yeah i've seen that option under my linksys settings...so what you're saying is just have the linksys router set to CLIENT and then hook the netgear router up to the cable modem correct? if i do that, how would i make the linksys router find the signal from the netgear router? see this is where i get confused about it all....thanks again!

You are going to name the ssid for the netgear whatever you like. Call it netgear for sanity sake. When you setup the WRT you will choose client and then input netgear as the ssid on the WRT and if you are going to use encryption make sure you use the same key on both devices. If you have the wrt setup for dhcp on the wan/internet connection it will find the netgear and get an ip from it then all will be well.

alright...so SSID is NETGEAR for the netgear router and also set the SSID for the linksys the same BUT on the linksys router, set it to CLIENT mode......now do you leave DHCP enabled or disable on the linksys router?

In your instance you will leave dhcp enabled on both devices. The linksys will get an ip from the netgear and you xbox will get an ip from your linksys.
