Why not leave the predefined setting? Your PC, laptop, whatever renews automatically if the lease time is over...

I'm going to agree with jan.n here. I spent way too much time fretting over this setting. Do I want a short period of time so I can more easily make changes to my network? Do I want a long period of time to minimize network traffic? Do I want devices with static IPs to get the same lease time as those with dynamic IPs?

Eventually I just stopped worry, and decided that the defaults were a good compromise. Every device sending a few extra messages every day is just noise in the grand scheme of things.

To make a minor correction to jan.n's comment. Most DHCP clients start contacting the DCHP server about renewing the lease when the lease is half over. They don't wait until the lease is up before getting a renewal. For example, if I look at my "devices" page, every device has at least twelve hours left on their 24-hour lease.

Oh, I didn't know that. I like this forum, I can learn lots of things... (no irony).
    Thank you, fyelllin! :)
