e3000 versus WHr-HP-G54

I got an E3000 in preparation for setting up dual wan (static IP DSL plus Comcast). When testing performance on the new Comcast install, I was getting 15Mbps+ when directly connected to modem, but only 2-3Mbps when connected through E3000.

After cleaning up the config (clean NVRAM and only changing WAN to DHCP), E3000 is now at ~12Mbps, but fluctuates a lot.

I decided to do some tests with my decommissioned Buffalo WHr-HP-G54. Both with an old 1.23 plain Tomato release and the latest R1-Std build from Toastman, it is maxing out and stable at 15Mbps. Again, clean NVRAM and only change WAN to DHCP.

The above is downloading from same remote host, no differences other than the router.

I will try to add two realtime bandwidth captures.

Does the E3000 have known performance issues? Is there a performance difference between the R1 and R2 builds? I was expecting the E3000 to be providing same base performance and to provide performance headroom for additional services. What I have seen so far is pretty disappointing.

The images below show realtime bandwidth, one for e3000 (top) and one for G54(bottom).

I have 5% performance penalty on tomato-E3000USB-NVRAM60K-1.28.7494.3MIPSR2-Toastman-RT-VPN.bin firmware vs direct connection with my 90 Mbps down/60 Mbps up Internet. So, probably it is something else.

I measured with speedtest.net, everything is off (but USB), including Tomato performance counters. Did you try speetest.net?

    Speedtest.net shows ~20% reduction:
    e3000: ~20Mbit/s down
    G54: ~25Mbit/s down

Did you try to disable QoS and performance counters? In my router QoS works very slowly, I still investigate it. It looks like there is some development activity in the performance counters area, so may be something wrong with them.

I will double check, but QoS is disabled by default.

I discovered that NVRAM clean-up issued from Tomato Web GUI actually does not clean everything. I had to use 30/30/30 reset (http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/30/30/30_method) after my experiments.

What firmware release do you use? I noticed some difference in performance between releases. You could try to use the firmware I mentioned before (at http://www.4shared.com/dir/v1BuINP3/Toastman_Builds.html#dir=145712805) But actually I am not sure about the difference because my release changes were accompained by other experiments.

BTW I also disabled wireless during experiments.

And you also might reboot your router after you made changes. I noticed some changes affect performance only after reboot.

One more major thing, I just forgot about it. There exists known problem with E3000 router overheat. And it does affect performance! All my experiments started from this problem. Make sure that your have at least an inch of empty space under your router bottom.

I ended up installing tomato-K26USB-1.28.0532-MIPSR2-8M-eng (english version of DualWan Tomato): after clearing NVRAM and rebooting, everything seems fine and the second WAN is working as well. So my E3000 is now fully operational at the expected performance.

It is great result! Good that your problems with E3000 are solved.

Did you guys ever find an English version of the latest Dual-WAN firmware for the E3000, tomato-K26USB-1.28.0542-MIPSR2-8M-cht.trx ? I'm assuming the file would be renamed to something like, tomato-K26USB-1.28.0542-MIPSR2-8M-eng.trx . I don't want to use Google Translate.
