EG0008W fan noise

I have two of these 8-port gigabit switches. Both have been replaced (under warranty) because of unacceptably loud fan noise (punctuated by the fan stopping with a thud, then winding up again), and now one of the replacements (no longer in warranty) is making the same sounds.

Anyone else have this problem? These boxes work fine otherwise, and all my other network gear is Linksys, but I don't want to buy another and have the same thing happen a fourth time!

I also have 8-port Gigabyte switch that is making excessive fan noise as well. Any fixes/suggestions, other than returning it for another that will probable have fan noise as well. I would like to fix this issue myself.

persoanlly if it's out of warantee anyway i'd pull it apart and either a) oil the fan or b) replace the fan...

How do you pull it apart?

if it's like the WRT54G (same case you grab the back end and the front end with the leds on it and pull in opposite directions and it should just pull apart...
theres usually a warantee void sticker on the bottom you should cut before doing that to make it easier.

Got it thanks! It is the fan that is bad. I am trying to find a replacement for it. Thanks again.

fans tend to do that after a year or two you can probably get another year out of it if you peel the sticker off and put some oil in the shaft...

I peeled back the sticker and it seems ok for now...But I'll continue to seek a new fan. Thanx a bunch!

instead of buying a new fan i would just buy a $3 fan and point it at the 8-port gigabit switches. that is just me i am lazy

yeah fans are kinda finickey they'll just start making noise and playing with them a bit can get them to shut up again, a lil bit of oil usually helps the process along but a new fan will definatly do it, check your local computer parts store, see if theres an OEM shop or something around they should be able to find you a fan thats the right size/shape...
