Extending WAG354G range with WRT54G

Hi everyone. I have a WAG354G and the signal is quite iffy in places, particularly now I have a WIFI enabled phone that I use all around the house. So I need to increase my wireless range and price is unfortunately a major factor. I see that the high gain antenna is 25GBP so I'm thinking that I may as well go for an access point instead, which I could also place elsewhere in the house extending the range even more. I've done some research and it seems that I could either get the WAP54G access point, or to save money get the cheaper WRT54G and use that as an access point instead.

I have read somewhere during my research that the WAP54G won't work with my current WAG354G and I'd need a range extender instead. Just one person said that though and I haven't read it anywhere else, so is there any truth to that please?

Does anyone have any better suggestions to extend my range, other than going for the WRT54G, used as an access point?

I do actually have a seperate modem that I could use together with a WRT54G as a router, which I know would give better range than my WAG354G (I used to have a WRT54G before I damaged it!) but if it won't cost any more, then being able to place a second bit of hardware elsewhere in the house would be a better setup.
