I enable the FTP server of my NSLU2 and try to access it through LAN but get following error message:

    *** CuteFTP 7.0 - build Jun 7 2005 ***

    STATUS:> Getting listing ""...
    STATUS:> Connecting to FTP server 192.168.1.100:21 (ip = 192.168.1.100)...
STATUS:> Socket connected. Waiting for welcome message...
220 FTP server at 192.168.1.100 ready.
    STATUS:> Connected. Authenticating...
    COMMAND:> USER anonymous
ERROR:> Timeout (60000 ms) occurred on receiving server response.
    STATUS:> Waiting 30 seconds...

Can anyone tell me what I did wrong? Thanks.

Are you trying to make an anonymous FTP login? Have you tried to FTP login with your regular administration ID and password?

  3. aries

    aries Network Guru Member

Admin login is fine. However, both anonymous and guest logins are having problems.

Are these problems occuring with an ext3 drive hooked up?

I found that anonymous FTP login would not work with just a FAT32 drive on the NSLU2. Plus a special password has to be set up for guest FTP access in that situation. This is the "Password for 'guest' account that is used during no EXT3 disk available:" setting.

Only a ext3 drive is hooked up and nothing else.

Hmmm... Well I've never tried to do what you are trying so can only offer non-specific advice.

What are your settings like on the System Location area? Did you upgrade firmware and have these settings in place before the upgrade?

I'm starting to suspect some of the quirky behavior of the NSLU2 is due to carry over of settings from previous firmware versions after an upgrade. For example, the ability to add additional back up jobs is locked out after the upgrade to R63. To fix this problem, you have to restore to default configuration and rebuild your settings manually.

As an absolutely last resort, you might think about doing this if you can't get anything else to work.

I also cannot connect from outside using CutFTP with admin as user. Following is the error message:

STATUS:> Socket connected. Waiting for welcome message...
ERROR:> Can't read from control socket. Socket error = #10054.

I already forward port 20 and 21 to my NSLU2 already. Connect thru lan using admin does not have any problem. IS there something wrong with the FTP server in NSLU2?

I try both PORT and PASV mode and even put it on DMZ mode but still without any success. Does it mean that it is impossible to access its FTP server through internet?

What router are you using? There were some fellows here recently that were having trouble passing FTP through a DLink router. They may not have ever got it working.

I have two routers: a Linksys WRV54G and a Netgear WPN824. Both of them are having problems.

Have you thought about trying different FTP clients? I know that most clients have costs, but they have trial periods to test if they work.

I tried CuteFTP and FlashFXP already. I will find some more trial version to try. Just to make sure if there is problem with my NSLU2 itself.

why don't you try accessing using your browser instead

    ftp://id:pw@x.x.x.x or ftp://id:pw@domainname

or if you're using firefox, try installing an extension called fireftp. Both are free :)

My NSLU2 FTP works fine both on LAN and Internet

I have used my nslu2 ftp server with a wrv54g without any problems .

Able to access the ftp server with filezilla , firefox or IE .

Your nslu settings are probably wrong .

Configuring the nslu2 can be a little tricky .

Allow anonymous FTP login ("guest" rights) - Enabled
    Enable Guest Logins - Enabled
Convert failed logins to "guest" logins (Windows networks) - Enabled

Enabling all 3 should allow annonymous access to the nslu2 . If not i would say reflash the nslu2 with either r63 or r72 .

It also cannot be accessed by browser. The settings suggested by svg1 are already enabled. I will try to flash it to r72 to see what will happen. Thanks anyway.

I finally find out that it is my ISP blocks port 21. Is there anyway to get around it?

Don't remember but I've seen someone done this. You could enable port forward on your router to forward from port 27 to port 21 on your NSLU2 (192.168.1.77), then

    ftp://id:pw@domainname:27

Try that and let us know

  19. aries

I cannot try it out as I am not able to find any port redirect function in my routers.

Did you look under UPnP Forwarding? Some Linksys firmwares have allowed port redirection there. For example, the 1.45.7 firmware for the SX41 did, but alas they removed it from the latter versions.

My WRV54G has uPnP forwarding. I try to forward external port 22 to internal port 21 of my NSLU2 and get following result:

I'm not familiar with that model of linksys, but I'm sure you can access the admin page and chk to see if there is an option for port forwarding

If uPnp of WRV54G is not working, I am considering to buy a RV042. Does anyone know any problem of uPnp with it?

looks as though your communicating with your NSLU2, but still has problem with your ftp client. Try the ftp command from a dos prmpt or from a browser

    ftp://id:pw@domainname:22

    c::\>ftp domainname:22

    let us know

I'm not familair with CuteFTP, so I can't say. Try use something simple like a browser. I'm using Firefox and it has an extension called FireFTP and works great for me. No fancy stuff like CuteFTP.

I would try it using filezilla . Its freeware & works very well .

May be wrong but i thought i read a post somewhere that stated cuteftp dont work correctly with the nslu2 .

You can get filezilla at http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/

    Will be release 2.2.22 dated april 20 , 2006.

i think its due to the pasv ip being sett incorrectly, either that or the client/server has been binded to the wrong ip.

    my 2 pence
