I was wondering if it could be possible to add a full disk encryption to our (yours, I still heven't received mine) beloved NAS...
I know the CPU isn't that powerful, but you can't say as long as you don't try. Perhaps using a usb hardware encryption accelerator (just wondering, don't even know if they exist :) )?

With this CPU you can forget about it...
Then you have the OS modifications needed, pretty difficult if it is even possible (again with this CPU is not) IMHO.

In theory I suppose it would be possible using my firmware. Build or download an encrypting file system (user mode or kernel module), create a file on top of the regular file system and mount it via loopback.

But as Jackito said, the NAS200 is already plenty slow without adding that burden to the CPU, so I don't think it's worth it. Except maybe for a small part of your file system that you want to keep secure (the part with all the scans from your passport, driver's license, social security card, bank account numbers, credit cards, Quicken backup etc). But you can accomplish that more easily by using encryption on your client computer(s), e.g. Truecrypt. That way the burden of encryption is on the client side and the NAS200 has the same amount of work.
