If you were going to purchase a new router today, which one would you get? WRT54G, WRT54GS or the new WRT54GX2

I want to replace my WRT54G but im not sure if the speed boost (GS model) or the SRX (with the increased coverage) is a better option? Has anyone played around with the GX2 yet?

With the WRT54G V2 I have I can't get a WAP54g or WRE54g to work with it. I've tried different firmware and different devices and every different "how to" in this forum. I've probably got 20 hours invested in trying to get something to work

Any opions or ideas would be appreciated.

tbh i would go for the WRT54GS since is can use 3rd party firmwares, however the New WRT54G v5 can not, and ordering over the net you wouldn't know what version you were getting.

The WRT54GX/GX v2/GX2 have good writeups but lack of available 3rd party firmwares, possibly due to incomplete source codes, make using only the official firmware the only option and the features are apparently limited and some firmwares still buggy.

Thanks Toxic, I think I'll spring for a GS inthe few days and go from there.

Well I purchased the WRT54GX (with 3rd party firmware) and after running it for a couple of days I returned it and picked up the WRT54GX2 wSRX. With the GX model I had the same signal/MPS slowness and with the G model, When I set up the GX2 it doubled the data rate (went from 24mps to 54  ) the signal went up a little (55% to 64%) so it's working great.

The only thing I noticed was when the initial set was done I had to keep changing the channel to get the laptops to connect and finally worked on channel 11 (auto didn't seem to work really well). The status page is a nice setup also.
