Got wrt54g v5 finally to accept WDS from GS unit

I was kind of pissed to find out last year that v5 did not comply
    with wds.
I had been a happy owner of WRT54GS v1.1 for a long time, so I hoped that a WrtG model will help me out in expanding the wireless area. But i turned out to be a crappy v5 one. So I hoped for a fix or custom firmware. And I waited...and waited.

Now it seems that the latest firmware Version: 1.00.6 really has fixed the problem with v5 repeater mode :)

    my setup looks like this:

    ADSL modem/router ----- WRT54G v.5-----(wds) ---- WRT54GS v1.1 ------ (wireless/or cable) ----- laptop

    WRT54G v.5 - linksys firmware 1.00.6
    WRT54GS v1.1 - HyperWRT 2.1b1 - Thibor

    WRT54G v.5 conf:
-Basic setup (automatic conf dhcp; local ip192.168.3.1; dhcp enabled
    - wireless (wireless mode mixed; ssid enabled; channel 6; security disabled;mac filter disabled)

    WRT54GS v1.1 conf:
-Basic setup (Internet Connection Type disabled; local ip; LAN Gateway ; lan dns ; subnet mask ; dhcp disabled
    - wireless (wireless wds-ap; network mode mixed; ssid enabled; channel 6; security disabled;mac filter disabled).
To put a WRT54G v.5 mac address (to get it, look at status -> wireless) into WRT54GS v1.1 , I set Bridge Restrict:enabled and pasted the mac value to Remote Bridges: field , saved changes, and rebooted. Right now Bridge Restrict is set to disabled, but the mac is still there, though it is greyed out.

To verify that I really am connected to GS unit I moved v5 unit quite far (too far to connect directly) and checked if i will be disconnected if the GS unit is turned off. (i got disconnected). I also looked in GS unit Status -> Device List and the RSSI value (read somewhere, that if there is a value , you are connected to this router, also your adapters mac is shown).

Haven't had time to experiment different security settings or stability statistics, yet.

So if you have a v5 unit and also something older and plan for wds, use the v5 as master and the other one as slave. You need custom firmware only for the slave one.

Hope it works for you also, all the v5 owners out there.
