WRV200 firmware beta: GPL'ed source available?

[This was deemed off topic and moved from http://www.linksysinfo.org/portal/forums/showthread.php?t=48590
The context is the "release" of new beta firmware for the WRV200. For reasons I've not fully understood, this posting seems to have been taken as a provocation.]

    Great news!

Is the source released? This is required by the GPL.

More carefully: I guess Linksys has not released this beta to the public. But they must make the source available to anyone to whom they make the binary available. So if they gave Toxic the binary, they should have made the source available to him too.

Toxic: can you get us the source too?

    Thanks!

why would you want the source anyway? there are parts of the firmware which dont come under GPL licensing, so even if you did get the bits that were under GPL the source would not compile into a firmware of you wishes.

The current frmware is an internal Beta. if it goes official then you will get the source code and you can do with it as you please.

The holders of the source are not Linksys. GemTek hold the source code and will release it when there is an "official release"

now....... anymore chat of GPL and i'll start deleting posts. this was meant to be for BUGs in the v1.0.20 firmware not discussion on GPL (which is one of my pet hates) and was banned a long time ago on this site.

The whole culture of "I want something valuable but don't want to pay for it", hidden under the guise of "the GPL says that your intellectual property should be made freely available to all" sucks. The GPL (for anyone that has read the thing) stipulates that where the base o/s kernel or integral drivers or subroutines of it are modified in such a way as to create a new invention then that part of the code must be made available, with full disclosure to all *but only if it intended for redistribution*. If I were to add new code, of my own invention, I can even modify the underlying code base and am under no compulsion either legally or ethically to publish my source code. I'm even (shudder) allowed to make money!

I think I'm going to go somewhere and purge my lunch. This whole thing makes me want to be sick....

We need a FAQ somewhere...prominently placed so people are forced to it and so we can make 'em go look at it....explaining how the GPL works in layman's terms. It's not rocket science.

    Here's a greate wiki:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License#Common_misconceptions

This doesn't take away from the fact that there's a huge, enthusiastic body of hobbyists and tinkerers out there who (like me) love fiddling with the code so we can examine it and (sometimes) better it. Linksys came out with the WRT54GL as a response to that very vocal crowd decrying, correctly in my estimation, Linksys' stinking VxWorks-based WRT54G/S models with crippled RAM and flash.

Linksys is going to turn there back on the whole bleeding OpenSource community if people don't get a life.

    Sheesh.

The posts were move since they are off topic.

I asked for anyone finding bugs to post in the thread. gpl was not a bug related issue. please keep on topic.

yeah one reason i hate having GPL wars on this forum, it starts flame wars and no one ends up any the wiser. i have said time and time again, yet people will not listen so here it is again:

If you want to discuss GPL issues take it up with GPL and the company involved in any dispute. discussion here is not for debate.

...Well I should have known better than to post in that thread anyway. It makes me a hypocrite but I just needed to share :)

I think people need to educate themselves on things before they venture an opinion. I try really hard to know what I'm talking about before drawing a line in the sand. It's something I tell my kids. I think Winston Churchill said that disagreement is the dynamic of human discourse. In plain english, if we didn't disagree, we'd have nothing to talk about.

    BTW, I feel much better...

The original thread was related to the 1.0.20 code for the WRV200. Incidentally I find that there have been some big improvements.

You feel better because of Mr Churchill?

Mr Churchill said alot of things, but people have short memories. Try telling that to the 205,000 British who died in Gallipoli because of what he said and done!

To Disagree or not doesn't realy matter here. GPL is off topic here. this site is linksysinfo.org not gplinfo.org
