I've been reading this forum all day and have read many posts about bricking the router after flashing the firmware.

I was wondering if an experienced somebody could post a simple procedure for us new guys on what to do prior to flashing and which versions we can update from (as jagboy stated).

I purchased a WRT54G (v3) today and would love to flash to DD-WRT but do not have a verified procedure to follow except for the bits and pieces I have picked up from reading numerous threads today.

If anybody could help out, it would be awesome.

No it does not thats for "EZ Setup" and with these 3rd Party Firmwares the button is useles.
The light that flashes is inside right under the front button. And flashes when you turn the router on or when you short the pins.

So will the following procedure work with a brand new router?

    1. Unpack and setup
    2. Flash to latest linksys drivers
    3. Reset by holding button
    4. Power cycle
    5. Flash to DD-WRT pre5
    6. Reset by holding button
    7. Power cycle

or do i have to flash to 3.2, then 3.3, then 4, and finish with pre5?

    thanks for the replies.

p.s. do i have to cycle the power after a reset via button?

I'm thinking of flashing my WRT54GS v5.1 (UK) with DD-WRT v23 SP2 micro generic firmware, I believe this is the correct version for my router, but have a question that suits this thread.

Can I upgrade to this firmware via Linksys' admin pages or do I have to go down the VxWorks prep and killer route?

One place I found said to simply use the routers admin pages and two others advise to use the prep and killer files before you TFTP DD-WRT.

I thought I would include the reason for my confusion and I hope someone can confirm the correct method for me.

On one of the DD-WRT Wiki pages it explains how to use the the Web GUI to flash DD-WRT, I assume while it's still Linksys firmware:

Then on the same page you can follow links to another of the Wiki's pages that refers to two external links for flashing and these tell you to prep and kill VxWorks and then TFTP the DD-WRT firmware:

Which is the correct way?

Depends what router version you have. Version 1 thru 4 and GL can be flashed from the GUI with ease. Version 5 has to be treated with special care due to VXWorks operating system, your second link.

    I have a WRT54GS v5.1, bought in the UK.

I don't mind flashing it this way, but I would like the option to revert to VxWorks. I found out this is possible from the Bitsum Technologies Wiki, but the file vxrevert_manual_gs_v06.zip is needed and the link is currently broken.

I'm desperately trying to source the above ZIP file in addition to two original Linksys firmwares, v1.50.5 and v1.50.8, or hoping someone can send them to me.

    Please help me LinksysInfo! :)
