After reading about this firmware hacking I'm well interested in buying a linksys router purely for this! Making it the 2nd piece of linksys hardware bought straight for hacking purposes (last was bluetooth adapter with increased antenna)

    - Which is the best and/or most popular router for hacking?

    - Is there one that can act as a fileserver too by taking an IDE hard drive for example? Is samba in any of the firmwares?!

    - I Even have a linux compatible USB HD caddy could I even use that via a ADSL USB port??!!

    - a 2 port or more hub/switch built in would also be handy. I'd be using wired connections mostly and wireless every now and then with a laptop.

Even if all this isn't really possible I'm still interested because of the CBQ bandwidth management options.

Does the bandwidth work immediately without much technical knowhow or does it take a lot of fighting? htb.init didn't work for me before :/

    The Linksys WRT54G/GS ;)

I'm not sure what you mean by an ADSL USB port :? The WRT54G/GS are cable routers so are not suitable for an ADSL internet connection directly, they also do not have a USB port.

A very small minority of broadband modems connect to the computer via USB instead, which I think to what he was referring.

True, but he's inferring a port on the router with which to attach a hard disk to :?
