I need help!! WRV54G will not connect to internet. This is a new install....the flow I'm trying to set up is Cable Modem ...Server...Netgear Switch...WRV54G. The wireless router will NOT recognize an internet connection on startup. I run the CD rom Setup and it demads a direct Cable modem...WRV54G ...Computer connection.....so I tried it ...no help....I'm trying to set up a Boingo HotSpot in a Box and apparently until I set up the router, I can't even get to their website....I need help!!

check on the physical connection... your modem should be connected to the internet port... then your computer should be on the numbered port... after that do a powercycle... turn off modem, router and computer... then start with your modem, wait a minute then router then your computer...

mmm ok but this leaves all pc's connected to the wrv54g exposed to hackers, no? I have a zone alarm firewall at the server so that it protects all clients beyond the server...What you say seems to bypass the server for all the wifi nodes. Perhaps this is only for setup purposes?

What do you mean by that, it's not picking up and IP address on the WAN side?

What does the routers status page tell you?

The WRV is not going to pick up a WAN IP if the WAN port "does not" have a direct internet connection. As of right now, it's functioning as a switch.

Somewhere along your configuration (if possible) you need to forward port 443 to your WRV and change the mode from "gateway" to "router" mode (for starters).

If I'm slightly off on this someone, please show me the error of my analysis :)

ok...so I called lynksys support. We set everything up as per convention. 10 times. We tried manual setup by invoking IE address 192.168.1.1 ...typed ADMIN for password : Result: error 401. Ran Ping utility: Returned ping correctly . cycled the reset button. and went again. about 10 times. Finally, he mumbles something about returning the gear and issues me a case #050728013484. I dunno if anybody here has access to that...but it's a starting point. What next?

PS..thanks for your input guys. Every post I read fills in a few info gaps.

hard reset the router... presss it for 1 whole min then turn it off... then do the power cycle again... try to check if the password is set to admin again... if still the same... replace the device... because you cant configure the router

I can't even use this as a hardwired switch. The lights blink but it won't pass data. PLUS, after this steup event...it left my Sygate Network utility configuration wrong...and I had to reconfigure to use my network. BTW, I'm using Sygate and Zonealarm for network admin and protection. When I ran the setup routine for this router, it DID invoke the Zonealarm gateway protection dialogue. We decided to kill zonealarm and Sygate for the setup. No help

Well how can I upgrade the firmware if I can't even get it to setup?

thats why try the hard reset on the router 1st... then check if you can access the setup page... and try removing the cache on your pc...

Ok thanks but let's slow down...

thats why try the hard reset on the router 1st... then check if you can access the setup page... <---this is what I just described... when I do this I enter 'admin' as a password for as per intsructions . No help

and try removing the cache on your pc... <---what does this mean?

This pc is my server runs at 75 mhz so any setup is really slow ... takes
about 10 mins to boot up every time I change something . At any rate the intention is to use this at the end of a network cascade from Cablemodem ---> server---> Netgear switch---> Wireless router. I'm assuming that this setup is only to establish an identity which can be changed later. But I'm thinking I should bypass the server and Netgear switch and try setup on THIS PC in my bedroom just to save time. I dunno.

disconnect the router from the netgear and server... then try to check aagin.,.. leave 1 computer connected to the router...

Ok.. This is what we did before direct : Cablemodem ---> Wireless router---> Server.

This time I'm going to go direct to THIS PC: Cablemodem --> Wireless router-----> THIS PC in the bedroom. I will disable the Sygate client . I will reset and kill power to make it clean and see what happens. This could take a while tho. So I may not be back for some time.

Ok I just got off the phone with Linksys. Their conclusion as before..is that I should return the unit for replacement. So....I expect that at BEST I won't need to return here for a week...if at all...if so....I will continue this thread...if not...thanks to all who attempted to help me. Your efforts in the fog of device failure are appreaciated for sure.

Now that was an interesting read (I'm speaking of the current thread...)

So, at this juncture, you either hate linksys tech support, which is a given, your router is dysfunctional since you bought it, or you were born unlucky :)

Unless you need new BETA firmware, have frozen/blinking lights upon purchase of a linksys device, STOP CALLING LINKSYS TECH SUPPORT! The information you get from either India or the Phillipines "is" conflicting due to the tech's unfamiliarity with the products. These guys haven't laid eyes, much less hands on half the items their "claiming" to assist you with. They poke around through the database while you're on the phone. That is something you can do on your own time, which is a shame... :(

I'll assume you used admin for the "username" and "password." That's all you need to do once you access the default web page setting (192.168.1.1).

Can you get to the internet with just your modem connected to either the pc or your server?
