I have a WRT54G v.3.1 router with two pc's and a printer connected. Everything works fine. The internal IP for the router is set at I wish to remote desktop to another network that has the same internal ip address. I first VPN to the other network using it's public IP. Everything works just fine so far. But when I try and remote desktop to a computer inside the other network it seems that trying to reference the desktop there as say, I can't connect. I suppose my question is can I change my router's internal IP to something other than, say and still have all the functionality of port forwarding etc. available? I'm noticing that the menus on the configuration screens of this router have fixed 192.168.1. xxx and only allow the last part of the IP to change. If I can't change this address what other options are there for the problem.

you can change the routers ip to anything you want. The reason it has only the last digits available is because thats for your range setting. Meaning if you set your router at then it allows 192.168.1.xxx ips. Look for an option to change the entire ip to whatever you plese.

Is the other network on the internet or within your lan. If its on the internet then you need to use the WAN ip (www.ipchicken.com) for VPN. I believe you use the WAN ip and then the hosts number such as 1, 2, 3, 10

    Thanks for the reply
The other network is not on my LAN.

I was able to simply change my router's IP address from to, and rebooted all my devices. So far so good. Remote Desktop now works as expected and all the port forwarding etc. was automatically changed as well to reflect the 193. I was expecting to have change a whole bunch of stuff.

    Thanks again
