OK, I have bought a WRT54G for my Dell Desktop and my wireless Dell Laptop. I have wireless router up and running and internet with no problem. I have set up office network and can see this from both PC and laptop but I cannot get access - says I may no have permission. I have set the shared files to give permission but I havent managed to get as far as seeing the files!!!! Very frustrating - me not being a techno-whizz like many on this site. Can someone please help....... :(

    I forgot to say.....

My PC pings into the laptop no prob but not vice versa - being new to "pinging" does this mean something in my PC firewall is restricting something? Not sure how best to confirm firewalls!!! But then I should be able to access the laptop via the PC as there is no firewall on the laptop yet!!

cold be your firewall. try turning it off first on both machines to see if you can access each way.

Thanks. Turning off both firewalls has done the trick! But surely I dont have to be firewall-less to get it working?!

I can now access files, both ways, but is it possible to run a program, like Outlook from one to the other. I have it set up on both but I want to access the same emails etc.

ok what firewall are you using?

you need to setup a rule for both firewalls to allow access from each others IP.

if you know that both PCs are safe then allow access to all ports from each IP of the PCs

    ie

firewall on PC1 ip 192.168.1.2 allow all ports from 192.168.1.3

firewall on PC2 ip 192.168.1.3 allow all ports from 192.168.1.2

    hope this helps.

You are still protected from Internet intrusion if the firewall on your WRT54G remains enabled.

If you wish to enable your client's firewall and still be able to share files and printers, as an alternative to Toxic's suggestion you can also enable the following ports to the local address 127.0.0.1.

    UDP 137
    UDP 138
    UDP 445
    TCP 139
    TCP 445

It is also possible to open Outlook or Outlook Express to the other machine's email storage, but only one computer can access it at a time.

Thanks guys - firewalls all up and working!

Anyone able to help me with the Outlook? Not sure which file to "share". The main PC has 3 separate accounts on it but I only want to network the main administrator's outlook to the laptop.

Apart from the above, Im finding the router great! Fab range - through many walls and to back of 100ft garden! Cant wait until summer!

Would be ultra pleased if someone could help me with the Outlook.

PS - to the forum administrator - apologies - only a member for a couple of days and managed to get locked out of my password - ended up reregistering from new again!
