I just got mine in, unpluged my wrt54gs and plugged in the new router.. nothing... i get redirected to what operator says is a "smart" installation which tells me no DHCP server is detected. okay i get off my linux box move everything into another room and setup on a windows box and the page says the same thing.. now on my linux box i can't connect to the internet directly from the cable modem but i can still do that here, which is what i'm doing.. it's only a 50$ router so it's not a huge deal so im considering trying tomato and hoping it'll just work like DD-WRT did for me on my wrt54gs.

any ideas if you own this router? did it suck too? i wasn't even going to bother trying to get it to work and just immediately flash it with tomato but i wanted to see how it was.

It's a great router, lousy stock firmware. I ran Tomato 1.09 on mine for over a year with no re-boots, My sister is currently running 1.23 on hers. I moved over to a WRT54G-TM because the ability to overclock to 250Mhz was a plus for me, Buffalo doesn't overclock at all.

I forget what the upgrade procedure from stock firmware is, search the board. DD-WRT also runs well on that router.

Jon's stock tomato firmware has a file for flashing Buffalo from stock firmware. I've used it myself!

I've been using WHR-HP-G54's for the last 2.5 years, very happy with them, even bought one for work.

Left the stock firmware on the work one, it had Slingbox streaming to UK, and a couple of wired and wireless users connected to it. Had no issues brand new straight out-of-the-box.

Ran the original Tomato firmware 1.19 on the home one, recently upgraded to Tomato's 'VPN build with Web GUI' mod for OpenVPN. Heavy Torrenting, VoIP (Skype, SIP), OpenVPNs, and streaming with Winamp users at home.

    No hardware issues till now.

It took a minute to flash the router with tomato and it immediately worked. Everything worked and I set my old wrt54gs up as a bridge and they're working well together.

Very happy with my choice.. although should have stuck to my main plan and just flashed with tomato immediately.. would have saved me 5 or 6 hours. :)

I purchased a WHR-HP-G54 about 2 months ago and love it. I have never had a problem with it. Tomato runs great on it. The only reason I can think that it didn't connect right away is if you didn't reboot the cable modem.
