High latency about once per minute on WRT54G wireless

I've got a weird problem and would appreciate any advice on it. Running WinXP/SP2, if I ping my Linksys (WRT54G-v1) I get 1 or 2ms latency except about 1 ping out of 50 or 60, it's 800ms or even 1500ms. I'm using Hyperwrt 2.1b1 firmware for the router and the regular Linksys drivers for the wireless NIC (wmp54g-v4). I don't think it's the firmware though, this happened using stock Linksys router firmware as well. This doesn't happen wired, only wireless. I've got the linksys firewall enabled, all the 'Block Wan' options selected, wpa-psk with aes turned on (using mac filtering and ssid broadcast disabled too but I wouldn't think that would matter). DHCP is enabled.

Again, any advice or similar experience is greatly appreciated.

Either of you happen to be using Windows Wireless Zero Configuration to connect your devices to the router? Last year I had lag spikes every minute like descibed above from my kids wireless desktop with a WMP54G installed. But my wifes laptop was fine. I replaced the wireless card but same results. Then I disabled WZC and used the Linksys monitor and connection smoothed out. My sons play WoW, COD, COD2, BF2 and all their other games wirelessly lag free.

Sounds like the cpu is having a hard time keeping up with all thats going on. The best way to test is shut off all wireless and unplug the wan, ping the gateway for several minutes and see if you see any issues, if not plug the wan back in and try again to the gateway if no issue ping across the router and then if theres still no issue run wireless and test again. One way or another you will find where the issue is.

On a side note i hit the above address for several minutes with no issue with a variance of 17ms with a avg ping of 192ms.
