High pings with router?

    Hi all,

I've got a linksys router with 4 hardwire ports and wireless capability. I am on comcast for my cable modem service.

Last Thursday my ping times suddenly went through the ceiling. I went from average times of 30 to 50 to well over 300ms.

I've tried a bunch of stuff like turning the modem and the router off and on again.

I have used a traceroute program and things actually look fine until the first ATT node comes into the hops about 4 or so in. On that hop the pings go up to 300 or so and stay there through the rest of hops. I've tried this to 7 or 8 sites with the same result.

I then connected my computer directly to the cable modem and took the router out of the process and my pings went way down to 20 to 40ms.

So with the router out it works fine with the router in my pings shoot way up when you get to the first hop with ATT in it.

I've had this router several years now. Could it be going bad or might there be another issue. I don't want to spend the money on a new modem if this is not the issue

well, in the for what it is worth category ... I found an old Linksys router and hooked it up and my problem went away so it must be the other router causing the issue. Time for a new one.
