how can I distribute my Dynamic IP?

I wanted to set up a VPN, so I can access my home pc from elsewhere. But i've read you need a static IP, so I've decided to go with setting up an FTP or web server on my pc and mapping a partition...now, is there a way I could have my IP emailed automatically or somehow displayed automatically everytime it changes?
if it matters, I have a WRT54G and a BEFSR41 (not being used).

thanks, but i'm actually not looking for a dns service... I'd like to keep this as free as possible. (too much money spent on this kind of thing already, don't need more bills). so just looking for something that will distribut my IP to a specific site (like a log maybe?) or email it. kind of like a trojan-but one under my control :)

Does your IP change that often? I know all ISPs are different, but my dealings with a few have all been DHCP and that address hasn't changed too often.. Maybe once a month...

The cheap route, would be just to check your IP on the router for a while to see if it changes. If it doesn't, there you go... If you ever have trouble accessing the resources, then the IP could have changed, maybe you would be down for the time it takes to look it up on the router...

Other than that, for hosting and more powerful applications, you would need a service like dynds.org

    Hope that helps...

Cool.. I see that it is.. I thought they used to charge for their service. Can't believe something is actually free..

    Thanks Guyfromhe...

I think they did at one point, now they have some free and some pay services... theres a pile of other dynamic dns services that you can use too that are all free there used to be ml.org theres still yi.org and a pile of others, though dyndns is built right into the router...
