How do you download and install firmware?

First of all I've briefly looked through the forum and not found an answer. I apologise if I've overlooked something.

    Router: Linksys WRT54GS
    Version: 1.1
    Country/Region: EU - United Kingdom - England

I've gone to the main website, looked up my model, looked up my version, clicked "Click here to view GPL Code" and then it shows a this.

I naturally go to the bottom of WRT54GS assuming these are all the past and latest firmware updates for my router.

At the bottom I get to 4.71.4 WRT54GSV3_v4.71.4_001.tar.gz which I've now downloaded and is sitting on my desktop.

My question is what do I do now? I know I need a .bin file and I know where the firmware update section is located in my router but do I need to find the .bin file in this file? and are the first two files in the folder.

Thanks for any help given. Linksys haven't exactly made firmware updating easy without doing extensive research.

That's the source-code, Linksys have used open-source code and so make their version available! The binary firmware will be a bit smaller and quicker to download - but I suspect this latest version is only available on the US site (but you lose a couple of high channel numbers with the US firmware in UK)

If that's the correct model - its a good one by the way, with 8MB flash and 32MB ram, sought after in the 3rd party firmware world!
