How to configure WAN connection

Discussion in 'Networking Issues' started by czerwinski1977, Dec 22, 2006.

  1. Hi there,

I run a Linksys WRT54GL with original linksys firmware (V4.30.7). My ISP (inode/Austria) provided a Zyxel P-600 DSL router. I would like the WRT54GL to auto-connect to the internet via the DSL router, but so far I could no manage to do... ;(

Connecting to the internet should work like:
    (1) PC is connected to DSL router via ethernet
    (2) DSL router (192.168.1.1) serves as a DHCP server
    (3) PC opens a VPN connection via 10.0.0.138 and receives a dynamic IP address.

These questions arose when I tried to configure the linksys router to do so:
    (1) Should I use PPtP or PPPoE?
    (2) PPPoE: what is the service name? I left it blank and received a message like "unable to obtain IP address from PPPOE server"
    (3) PPtP: I tried IP 10.0.0.138, subnetmask 255.0.0.0, gateway 192.168.1.1 (why do I have to provide a gateway!?) -- router refuses setup: "IP address and gateway do not have the same subnet mask" -- why does it have to be equal?
    (4) advanced routing: should I use set to "router" or "gateway" -- what is the difference?

I would highly appreciate answers to my questions and hints how to solve (or where to look to solve) the problem -- thanks in advance!

    Czerwinski
