    Hello everybody!

Its a pleasure to contact you all, among the forums in the web you was the most helpful with previous issues i had, i admit im a lurker and never came to say thanks but im here now, and say Thanks for your help guys.

I got one big problem that is making my life miserable; my PPTP connection always drop, randomly, sometimes ater few minutes sometimes after few hours.

The point is i need a script that reconnect my PPTP connection when it drops or keep it alive using a watchdog or keepalive script or some configuration that keep alive my router.

Im using a Router Asus RT-N66U with a Tomato Firmware 1.28.0000 MIPSR2-116 K26 USB AIO-64K best know as Shibby, i know that OpenVPN connection offer that reconnection after some seconds but my VPN provider can offer in China due to the Chinese great wall and their new DPI system to catch tunnels, and because the goverment target my provider ExpressVPN for doing soo agressive marketing.

I have go to many websites and find nothing just DD-wrt scripts or DD-WRT setup but for Tomato nothing.

Thank you very much for your help.

What makes you think something that "keeps your PPTP connection alive" is going to fix this problem? To me it doesn't look like that's going to fix anything.

If you look very closely at the pptp logging lines and timestamps, you can clearly see when the pppt daemon exits due to the connection being severed, the pptp daemon starts back up and attempts to reconnect but cannot. You can clearly see the PID number with pptp changing, indicating it's restarting. I bet occasionally/intermittently this works, which leads me to believe -- since you say this is a VPN/PPTP provider -- that there is a problem with the Internet (you do realise network paths and routes are broken constantly on the Internet, right?) or a problem between you and the PPTP/VPN provider.

The issue could be on the PPTP/VPN providers' end, but you would need to talk to them about that.

I'd be willing to bet if you did packet captures you'd find your PPTP connection, because it's TCP-based, was repeatedly sending out packets and not getting a response from the remote end. If this is the case, there's little to nothing you can do about it; no "ping" or "keep the connection up" script will solve this problem because it's not an issue of idling, it's an issue of the network between you and the provider becoming unstable.

My recommendation is to get use a different VPN/PPTP provider. If there's a problem on the Internet between you and Hong Kong, there really isn't much you're going to be able to do about that, sorry to say.

P.S. -- In the future, do not obfuscate/hide IP addresses in your logs. You tried to, but you missed a few, which is quite amusing. When asking for networking troubleshooting, omission or editing of any log data usually will result in the network administrator not helping. Just an FYI.

    Hi Koitsu.

Thank you very much for you reply.

Im sorry for the IP hide i tought that was dangerous i dont know soo much about this. I just want to see facebook and youtube freely in my house in China.

I showed this to the Support of my vpn provider (ExpressVPN) and they told me that i have to use another server in Australia or the west coast of US, i tried, the connection drop and was very slow. They dont offer me any solution so i go to another VPN supplier to see what they say.

I chat with other VPN servers as SafeVPN and they told me that the PPTP connection normally drop by GRE breaching, they explained that this happen common, but i can setup a reconnection timer. Thats why im trying to find one.

But now you tell me this i realy feel hopeless because i just can use OpenVPN and that one dont work on mobiles.

This error is means that my router cant recognize the host?

The error in question indicates DNS resolution of pptp-hk.expressnetwork.net is failing, quite possibly due to issues with your own Internet connection/ISP, possibly the Internet, or possibly something with the PPTP providers' network (though after reviewing their DNS NS records, I think this is unlikely; they're geographically distributed and use Amazon Web Services, although all their nameservers do reside within 205.251.0.0/16, but smaller netblocks are announced on the Internet (ex. 205.251.192.0/23, 205.251.194.0/23, 205.251.196.0/23, and 205.251.198.0/23)).

I cannot help past this point, sorry.

    Hello Koitsu.

Thank you very much for your help.

I already payed the 100 USD with the OpenVPN, so i got no choice to spend it in another one.

Im pasting here another codes, if you can see something that can help i will appretiate.

Again Thank you very much, linksysinfo forum helped me a lot.

    Code:

There are numerous things going on here:

    Code:
    Feb 14 12:50:23 unknown daemon.info pptp[15427]: No response to 3 echo-requests
Feb 14 12:50:23 unknown daemon.notice pptp[15427]: Serial link appears to be disconnected.

This indicates the PPTP "keepalive" protocol going on between you and whatever the PPTP server is (I assume this is the VPN provider?) stopped working -- meaning, the PPTP daemon on TomatoUSB sent an internal PPTP keepalive/echo packet to the PPTP server and no response was received. This was done 3 times, and because there was no response, the PPTP daemon on Tomato considered the connection dead.

You're using a PPTP provider that's across the Internet, therefore why this is happening is very difficult to determine; the above logs are not enough. You will need to do a lot of debugging on your side, in addition to the PPTP provider doing it on their side. One side doing the troubleshooting is not enough to debug a network issue of this kind! I cannot stress this enough. The reason it isn't enough has to do with asymmetrical routing.

    Next, this:

    Code:
    Feb 14 12:50:59 unknown daemon.err pptp[15427]: PPTP: Unknown host pptp-hk.expressnetwork.net
Feb 14 12:51:16 unknown user.debug kernel: UDP: bad checksum. From 120.136.32.63:53 to 111.222.35.87:24035 ulen 53
    Feb 14 12:51:29 unknown daemon.err pptp[15427]: PPTP: Unknown host pptp-hk.expressnetwork.net

    This indicates:

    1. DNS resolution of pptp-hk.expressnetwork.net failed. This could be caused by DNS servers not working correctly -- and if they're your ISP's DNS servers, then it's very likely you have a network connection problem between you and your ISP that needs to be investigated.

    2. A DNS response packet, from DNS server 120.136.32.63, was ignored by the Linux kernel (Tomato) because the UDP checksum did not validate. This is indicative of bad packets, which is USUALLY a sign of a network connection problem between you and the DNS server (which again, if the DNS server is your ISP, then this usually indicates a problem with your Internet connection).

    3. Same situation as #1 again.

Internet connection problems between you and your ISP could also be caused by bad equipment or cabling (cable modem going bad, ADSL modem going bad, bad Ethernet cable between your router and the modem, etc.).

But everything I've seen so far indicates that you have problems with your network connection, probably to your ISP. They will need to try and help you with this.

And finally I will repeat myself in a bold, large font: I CANNOT HELP YOU PAST THIS POINT.
