Hub Acts like a switch

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Ferrous_Oxide, Oct 22, 2004.

  1. I bought 3 Linksys EF2H16 hubs to use to monitor traffic. The documentation says they are hubs, but they act like switches. They can't see the traffic on the other ports. Anyone else had any experience with Linksys hubs?

How do you know they can't see traffic on the other ports?

In order to see traffic meant for other computers you need 2 things

    1. A packet filter like ethereal
    2. A network card that is capable of promiscuous mode, IE it accepts packets for any MAC address.

Also if you have upgraded to Windows XP SP2 the network layer might not allow promiscuous mode, as I know some network sniffers no longer work with SP2 installed.
