How much exactly does the HyperWRT firmware increase the power output
on a WRT54-G by default? I noticed that on the HyperWRT installation page
it was claimed the users would immediately notice increased wireless range
and performance. I am assuming that this is due to an increased default power
setting but would like to know exactly how much the increase is over the
    Linksys default? Double?

Depends on the firmware version you are using from Linksys. Remember doubling the power does not double the range. You have to have four times the power to double the range. As you increase power you aare increasing the noise levels of your transmissions, which negates some of your power increase. In addition, when increasing power, you maybe interfering with other transmissions. You should only increase the power till you get a reliable connection. Where possbile you should go with better antennas, whic increases your ability to pickup signals and to send signals as well. Unless there is a problem with the SWR (standing wave ratio) of an antenna, you are get more apparent signal at the expense of beam width.
